Here's a batch of shots from the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary on the north end of the Alaska Peninsula. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov …cfm?adfg=mcneilriver.main (external link)

The difference is a geographic one. They are both the same species (Ursus arctos) but bears found on the coast are generally called brown bears and bears not on the coast are called grizzlies. Brown bears are usually larger due to access to salmon.

Very nice captures, I really like the focus on their faces.

Wow, nice shots. They all look so different, would be very easy to distinguish one from another, many animals all look nearly identical. You sure were close enough. I hope to shoot some Grizzlies in Sept, if given the chance you had in these shots, I hope my legs will stand still.

Great job! It looks like it was a memorable trip. What lens were you using for these images? If you had a chance to do it again would there be any changes to your equipment that you would have preferred to make?

@BrianB
I work out there and over the last few years have my kit dialed down to a canon 100-400 on a 7D. It is portable. takes good pics. Can go with or without a tripod. That set up is probably the most common we see out there. A lot of people carry a lot of glass and ultimately it boils down to what you can carry. If I was going for 4 days (the length of a standard permit) I might look into renting something faster than the 100-400. I would also be sure to have a wide angle for when the bears are close.
