All of the reviews I have found are pretty dated, so I thought I would ask. I can't decide between these 2 lenses. Both have good reviews, but I would like some knowledgeable opinions from the fine folks at POTN.

Much depends on how you judge a lens. Now, if you choose the practice of looking at pictures generated by a lens, you could glance at images such as these, which used a Canon 18-200mm image stabilizer lens.

After you've actually used a Canon 18-200mm image stabilizer lens, you find that it's a good and effective unit that works well when pointed at three- dimensional subjects. However, many people "know" that no one should ever use superzoom lenses.

The Canon is better than most at the long end. Sigma is better at the wider end. All in all, they are probably a wash.

What type of camera do u use? aps-c or ff?
Anyway, I think 250mm is too long, especially on aps-c.

If I meet you again,
After a long period of time,
How should I compliment ...
With silence,
Or with tears ......

Using a 7D. Why do you consider 250mm too long?

Not to contribute to topic drift, but it's easy to produce actual images where a very long lens is very useful.

The world offers many situations where a very narrow field of view is needed to produce the correct framing. Among these situations, including those demonstrated here, are cases where it's too risky to get close to the subjects. Where circumstances include the risk of injury or death, it's best to either use a supertelephoto, such as the Sigma 150-500mm put to work here. In the case of the racing images, you'd either be dead or arrested if you got any closer. And, no one has figured out a way to hang in mid-air during a Thunderbirds performance.

Most of my shots are taken with the sigma 18-250 on a 7D whilst I await my 5Dmk3 and canon 70-300L f4. I chose the sigma for the price advantage when reviews for both were similar

Some samples shot on the long end at weekend
