I am looking for a wide lens for travelling and general use.
I have sigma 35mm and been travelling with the lens alone. It was fine but having a wide lens as additional lens would be great as it enables me to get all the compositions i would ever need as a traveler.

i been considering 17-40mm or 14mm samyang. i am having a hard time making decision between those 2. 14mm seems to give the sharpest image even compared with higher end L series lenses. but 17-40 is very versatile.

i am leaning toward the 14mm right now but i'm still looking for more opinion.

what body you using? if it's choice between those 2 I'd get the 17-40, autofocus, will take filters, more versatile and "general purpose", the 14mm focal length IMHO is a pretty specialised focal length

unless of course you are just looking for something as wide as you can get then of course go for the samyang

i always believe that 24mm is the range that i still can achieve by stepping back most of the time with my 35mm.

17-40mm is very attractive focal length if the sharpness can compete with the samyang 14mm.

mate the 17-40 is fine sharpness wise, I think it's a bit exaggerated that it's soft or what not, all the sharpness in the world is not going to matter if you can't get the shot, so you'll have to decide whether or not the 14mm focal length will suit your needs, particularly if you plan to walk around with it, keeping in mind 14mm is extremely wide on FF

FWIW here are a few shots with my 17-40, for me I pretty much use it exclusively as a landscape lens

Iimagine with this lens i am able to take pictures of my wife and at the same time covers alot of background. With 14mm all object more than 1 meters away from the camera will be on focus.

I like the 17-40 for landscape photography, especially on a FF body. It's also very lightweight if you're going to be hiking around.

if you step down the aperture yea, but so will the 17-40

anyway i think you are pretty much set on getting the 14mm, but if there is still any doubt the best way is to go in to a shop with your 6D and memory card, play with both lenses, get a feel for the focal length, take a few snaps and go home and have a play with the raw files to see if you like the results

good luck with purchase

at any ultra wide angle you are going to have a lot of distortion of close objects or people in the foreground, although way more at 14mm.
