The "Little" Nuggest, located just under the famous Reno arch, next to the now shuttered Fitzgerald Casino is probably best known for it's famous "Awful Awful" half pound hamburgers. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, this hamburger traces it roots to the chain of Nugget casinos that were opened in Reno and Sparks, during the 1950's. The name Awful Awful is short for the original moniker, Awful Big and Awful Good. You can get to the restaurant through the front or go through the seedy Douglas Alley located behind the casino/restaurant.

The Kings Inn in Reno is amongst the most blighted of the abandoned buildings downtown. Originally opened in 1974, the property immediately experienced financial distress; changing ownership structures and facing picketing workers before the $10 million property even opened. By 1981 the Kings Inn declared bankruptcy, and was repurchased by one of the original owners, Allan Bergendahl. Shortly after the Kings Inn was closure was forced by HVAC and fire systems that did not meet fire code. The property has sat abandoned since that time. The city fights a losing battle of keeping the drug addicts and homeless out of the condemned building.

The Old Reno Casino has seen it far share of controversy over the last few years. Sharing a wall with the oldest commercial structure, which served at the Reno Mercantile and the Masonic Lodge from 1872-1970, the previous owners effectively prevented anyone from demolished the historic building. The owners claimed that any attempt to demolish the 100 year building would injure their property. Recently the property has gone abandoned and in a controversial political move the city of Reno took ownership of the Old Reno Casino using imminent domain law, for just $1. Subsequently the city sold the property for over $630,000, but it remains vacant and neglected to this day.

Thanks for sharing the images and the stories behind them. I like that kind of presentation. Might be interesting to get some of the abandoned places interior shots.

A little bit of a tonal contrast thing.
