A friend asked me what flash to get for use with the T3i but didn't specify what kind of photography she plans to use it for so I'm going to say "general". My thought is it depends on how much you want to spend and how much distance you need but I'd like to know if there are any amongst Canon's current offerings ranging from the Speedlight 90x up to the 600EX-Rt that Canon users here would specifically recommend against. Thanks for your input.

If wanting to stay Canon specific, I'd recommend starting out with the 430EX II. It's a nice all-around flash, and pretty affordable.

I'd recommend starting out with the 430EX II.

Mine's 4½ years old and hasn't missed a beat. It can also be used off-camera with the T3i without any additional equipment.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks to you both for confirming.

Even though I am using a 3rd party flash, I borrowed a 430 and played with it and it was a decent little flash. If they are planning on staying in the Canon family, this would be a great starter flash.
But be warned, once you see what adding light can do, they will be looking for their next one.

For close to the price of a 430EX II you can get the Phottix Mitros (external link). I like the compact 430EX II, but if I had to choose just one the Mitros wins out by a long stretch.
