This morning I came across a female ruffed grouse leading her gang of (well grown) chicks across a roadway. My presence caused some uncertainty at first but in the end everyone relaxed and made it across...must have been at least 8 of the young all told, they just kept popping out of the tall grass at the roads edge.

Cross...or Hide?

Well, I ain't scared!

Beautiful shots, Mike, always nice to get family shots. Looks like you were laying down on the job, you got a nice low angle. ;)

Very nice set! Love the feather detail. Were you dressed out in camo to get this close, or hiding low in the weeds? Great job.

These were surprisingly easy to approach, as is often the case with Ruffed Grouse in my experience. I just approached slowly, pausing whenever they seemed ready to get agitated.
Thanks for looking in.

Thanks SJC, I think in this instance having thick cloud cover helped with the even lighting.

Super job on this set! I haven't seen a Grouse since I was eight years old. And that was, well, a long time ago!!!! Thanks for putting these up.

Great shots, Mike; the little guys are quite grown up already.
