everyone said the optical qualities would be the same as the previous model...this seems to say it's significantly better:

Based on what I was initially hearing and understanding about this lens, I figured I'd pick up a 120-300 "S", capture the standard image quality test results, use it a little bit, write a little bit and move it along. But, my plans changed – especially after I saw the image quality this lens delivered. I'm quite pleased with what Sigma has done with this lens model.
It is hard not to like a great looking lens with a 120-300mm focal length range in a non-extending, solidly built body that also feels great – and delivers image quality that leaves most other zoom lenses wanting even at this lens' wide max f/2.8 aperture. I like the direction Sigma has been going with their recent lenses and I think they have another hit with the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Lens.

i'll await lensguy's inevitable "sigma sucks" post...

Sigma themselves said the optical formula is unchanged. The review suggests that there is an additional FLD element in the new 'S' lens which is not the case, the original OS also had two.
I suspect any IQ improvement is due to the ability to fine tune the AF which is a significant advantage but I expect a good copy of the OS may match the 'S' optically.

This was with the older OS lens it would be difficult to imagine getting a sharper shot. Whilst some of the new features are attractive to me particularly the range limiter, I'm not sure I can really justify the additional cost of changing.

He hasn't posted in awhile...I'm guessing he's realized his personality has found yet another forum that he doesn't get along with, so he'll move on to somewhere else to be condescending.

As for the lens- I too was surprised to read about the IQ improvements TDP noted in the review. Either way, assuming it holds up to long-term use, I think it's a heck of a value, and one I'll considering purchasing in the future. I've previously had the 120-300 non-OS and the first OS (would still have it had it not been for a great deal I got on a 400mm DO that I've been wanting to try), and the range, especially with TC's, is unmatched unless you spend a kings ransom on a Canon 200-400 f/4.

QUOTED IMAGE

As a huge Jenson Button fan I'm inclined to agree based on that fact alone. :)

Maybe the mods put him time-out for creating a second profile, "TopGear3"

I am very interested in this lens :O and I was never inclined to use a third party solution. Having said that, I don't see Canon ever putting out such a beast at a price point that doesn't require for me to sell my kidneys.

Non-extending, internal focusing, good image quality.... I am going to try it on my 7D and if it gels, my wallet will take a hit.

Thanks for the link OP. I am excited about this....
