I need to convert about 2-3000 raw files to small jpegs (320x480) for use on a phone. Trying to do it in PS6 Image Processor is killing my system (2.1ghz), and it's taking forever (1+hour per hundred).

Is there a quicker/less demanding way I can do this? I also have DPP and LR5.

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

Have you tried exporting them via LR5... and using the Resize to fit 480 pixels on the long side option?

I use manual exposure settings on the copy machine

That is probably the slowest way. Importing with a suitable import preset, making previews, exporting with an export preset.

Given that DPP defaults to using the in camera settings for it's conversion that may help a bit if it saves you from having to apply presets etc. I would expect that your HDD is the real determining factor to how fast you can actually generate the JPEG files. I have always thought that the PS image processor was very slow though. If the files are already in your LR catalogue then that may be a bit quicker. All I can really suggest is setting it going and leaving it overnight, and hope you don't get an error.

Start the process before you go to bed. When you wake up, its done :).

Instant JPEG from Raw (external link)

Every raw file has an embedded jpeg which is used to display the image without the laborious process of interpreting the raw data. IJFR can extract this embedded jpeg and save it to the same, or a sub-, folder. It can also shrink them to a smaller size.

Just select the files you want to extract in Windows Exploder, right-click, click on 'Instant JPEG from Raw', select your desired image size (if you enter 480 pixels for maximum width and height then it will properly re-size both portrait and landscape images to 320x480 or 480x320, respectively) and wait. 2000 images should take about 15 minutes.

Beat me to it Hollis. Saw the post and thought "The guy down in Suntree who makes the AFMA target has a program that extracts the JPEG from the RAW without converting." Scrolled down and found I didn't need to find the link. Good little program.

Mass Spec, takes me back to when I worked at GTEs lab in Queens, NY.

Awesome! I'll give it a go when I get back home.

I did switch to DPP (first time I've ever used it for anything), and it was much faster then PS. Got about 600 done in about an hour. Trouble is, I was only able to select from one folder at a time from what I could tell, and all of the images I need are spread over 2 years of LR-categorized folders.

Will 'Instant' allow me to select from different folders?

I don't think so. You could try searching the whole drive (or a relevant folder) for *.CR2 files. That should get them all in one explorer window for selection.

Just gave it a go. If you use Explorer to search for *.cr2 across all the different folders then you can select them all in the search results window. Tell IJRF to save the jpegs in folders next to the raws. Only problem with that it they'll all be in different folders.
