I bought an original 5D about 6 months ago, been working great. I just bought a set of Vivitar Extension Tubes off of Amazon, slapped one on the 5D and.....dead. Won't turn on, no lights, no sign of life period.

After researching online, I was able to find a few instances of other people who had this happen when using non-Canon extension tubes on the 5D. Sounds like it's probably a blown fuse...but sounds like about a $200 or more fix from Canon.

Uuuuggghhhhhh

Sorry to hear that. My 5D AF points no longer illuminate and will cost $200 to fix also.

Are you trying to decide whether to have it repaired or sell it for parts? Would other repair shops be able to repair it for less?

Yep, tried 3 different batteries, CF card out, CMOS battery out....no signs of life at all.

Ya...I'm debating, but I think I will probably get it fixed. I just can't afford another camera right now. I don't really have any local shops, so I will probably have to send it in.

Yep, sure does...but it looks like you have plenty of cameras, you could just send me your 5D III!

I hadn't heard this before. But when I did a search I found a few more reports of the same happening. There must be a short in the electronics, but it's beyond me why it would primarily effect 5D classic.

Exactly which set were you using? Is it the newest type that can be used with EF-S lenses, too? Is it the set with the metal bayonet mounts, or the cheaper one with the plastic bayonet?

The Vivitar tube set is exactly the same as what's sold under the Bower, ProOptic, Jessops and several other brand names. I am fairly certain they are made by Zeikos and they are sold under that brand name, too. Pretty sure Polaroid, CowboyStudio, Phottix, Aputure, Meike, HD3 and Xit brands are just relabelled Zeikos, too.

Fotodiox, Neewer and some other brand names also might be the same. But may be different. I'm just not sure. They have a different release button.

I know for certain that the Kenko are not made by Zeikos... are made by THK or Tokina/Hoya now (I've been using a set for many years).

Opteka is now making their own tube set, too.

Wow! I am sorry to hear about your trashed camera. That is a significant repair cost compared to the value of your camera. I do think if my 5D suffered a similar fate, I would at least get a Canon estimate for the repairs.

Just curious here. Does anyone think there is any danger mounting my Tokina, Tamron or Sigma lenses on my 5D? 19-35, 28-75, 70-200 f/2.8 OS are my non-Canon lenses.

Ya, very strange that it seems to happen just with the 5d. I bought the Vivitar brand, and they have Vivitar markings, but I am aware that they are the same tubes as many other brands. They work fine with both EF and EF-s lenses, electronic focus and aperture control work perfectly, metal bayonet...they seem to be of good construction.

I've attached a few pictures at the bottom to show the tubes.

Ya, I will definitely be getting an estimate from them before I send it in...I have actually never had to send anything in to them before! I really would like to just put the money towards a new camera...but not sure if the finances will support that right now.

As far as your other question, I have had no problems at all with any third-party lenses on my 5D (I have only used Canon, Tamron, and Sigma so far).

Here's the full set of tubes

As a minimum please postvyour experience on the Amazon website so maybe the next guy will be aware. Not likely but you never know. I for one usually look at the bad reviews for any patterns.

I fear the day. Recently bought a classic here and absolutely love it. Hell yeah, I'd fix it for 200.

The only curious problem is that the white square for canon EF-S lenses is completely in the wrong place. That made it confusing to put these tubes on at first. I would expect a little more from the Vivitar name.

At least one reviewer at Amazon reports no issues with his 5D, although he may have shortened the model designation from 5DII or 5DIII.

I find the quote above interesting. Could it be that the contacts weren't properly lined up and thus caused an issue?

Amen to this. $200 would be a no brainer.

I would take it up with vivitar or the amazon seller and make them pay for it,
happened to me on when I bought a hard drive power source.

First thing it did was fry my hard drive! Made them pay for a brand new one.

Such a shame that today's vivitar is not the good old vivitar from back in the day.
