Leaving next week for another trek in GNP and have the 100-400 coming via Lens Rental. A simple question for those in the know: IS on or off when attached to a tripod?

Hoping to catch some moose in the lakes and other creatures too ... :D

Yep, definitely off, unless the tripod is on an unstable platform.

Yes, definitely off.

Enjoy the park. We just returned from a week-long visit. My 100-400L got a workout, between the mountain goats, big horn sheep, mule deer, moose, and one grizzly. Also saw a ptarmigan with chick on the Hidden Lake trail at Logan Pass. I am still sorting through all the photos.

Even though the 100-400 has IS, its a big, long lens and the IS is an early generation so I recommend keeping the shutter speed faster than the 1/FL rule whenever possible.

Only IS on with tripod if it is windy and the tripod affected. Or if something else make the tripod shake a bit. With zero shake, the 100-400 IS will go bananas.

If you're looking for moose in Glacier, make sure you hike out to Fishercap Lake. It's in the Many Glacier valley and the hike is less than a mile. When we were there a bull moose was hanging out there almost every afternoon. Good luck and enjoy your trip!

If your tripod is stable and still, the IS should be turned off.

Yeah this will be my 4th trip to GNP and this around we'll be at Swiftcurrent so the evening trek to Fishercap will be right outside the door, so to say ... ;)

You know that actually might be something to consider as I'll be using my lite weight Gitzo's hiking tripod. I'll just have to give it a test in both positions on the lens when it arrives.

I've used mine in "Pan" mode on a gimbal head, with good results.

With a gimbal head "you're" typically moving the rig around a central anchor/pivot point; however maintaining "adequate" shutter speed is still "primary".

Use mine on a tripod with IS off, but leave it on with a monopod if you have one. Have a nice trip and post your best :D

We had the worst luck moose "hunting" at Fishercap Lake this year. It seemed like every time we headed there we heard "you just missed the bull". We tried different times and stayed 1-2 hours each visit with no luck, but finally at least saw a cow on our last attempt before heading to the west side of the park.

I'm hoping for better results! My son will be packing this lens so we'll have it on all the hikes and we've got some distance to cover.

Just a quick test handheld in bad lighting with the rented copy, seems spot on and would've sharper if I'd used a tripod I believe.
