Using this shot as an example, taken with the 10-22 lens at it's widest setting.

Can I do anything to improve the distortion? I know it's probably worse as I was shooting looking upwards.

I tried using DXO Optic Pro software to process the raw file but couldn't see any improvement?

Thanks for any advice.

PS's perspective or Transform can handle this, and CS2's Lens Correction filter does an excellent job.

As to DXO, is the lens used in their database?

In photoshop
Ctrl-A select all, Ctrl-T brings up transform tool, and hold Ctrl and move the corners that you want to fix

If you can hold the cam absolutly level, you can "fix" a lot of it before you take the shot. ;)

On the other hand, I really like Paul's original distorted shot. In conjunction with the very low cloud where the buildings vanish into the haze, it looks to me to be a nice composition, particularly the way the Star Ferry pier juts towards the camera. The horizon, such as it is, looks pretty flat.

But, I suppose that's not the topic of this thread...

Hey, thanks Paul; currently 37 degrees in Melbourne, I think I might turn couch-potato and watch the Australian Open on TV for the rest of the afternoon (Henin-Hardenne v. Sharapova, who is pin-up girl in the adverts for Canon Powershot!).

By coincidence, I was in Hong Kong (where you took the above shot, for those who didn't recognise it) around New Year, and while on a harbour cruise on New Years Eve met a couple holidaying from the Channel Islands. Jersey, to be specific. I don't think the guy's name was Paul though :) (although I'm a shocker for names).

I'm actually from Guernsey, the other Channel Isle, we don't mention Jersey ;)

We're currently in Perth which is about the same sort of temps, lovely :D

We'll be driving towards Melbourne sometime in the next couple of months, we're really looking forward to exploring that part of the country.

Best wishes

Paul.

Yeah, Perth can get a bit warm in summer. I haven't done the drive from Perth to Melbourne myself, but there are a number of side roads off the Nullabor Plain which lead to what I'm told is one of the world's most stunning coastlines. You may be the only people for a couple of hundred kilometres in every direction. Should give your 20D a nice workout!

In Victoria, the Great Ocean Road from Port Fairy through to Lorne is also in the "not to be missed" category. Not so much for architectural shots like the one you posted above though. :)

Melbourne, and Victoria in general, in March/April is glorious. Not to mention the Formula One race then; great photos even with General Admission, except race day (very crowded by comparison). Oh yeah and the Commonwealth Games too; accommodation will be chockers in March for the Games.
