Might seem odd to put a bat in the macro section, but...

this is the Western Pipistrelle; the smallest bat in the US. Most references indicate a body length of about 65mm, or 2.5". This one was even smaller, so it may be a newly weened pup. After taking several shots, I attempted to photograph my index finger next to it for size perspective, but it flew off. It was no longer than 2" in length. Adults weigh 5g; the same as a US nickle.

These shots were taken in the dark, on a ladder, with a 5DIII, 100mm f/2.8L, and 580EXII with a diffuser. I had to use Auto focus, and the AF-assist beam from the Speedlite. I'd say the combo nailed focus pretty well. :)

2. This shot was taken about 7" away (working distance).

Here in the UK you'd need a special licence to photograph a bat at rest - and most photographers wouldn't get one! So, great shots, and the camera really nailed the focus but you'll not get much competition from this side of the pond.

That's a bit strange, unless the concern is bothering them in their natural habitat. These sometimes roost on the wall of my backyard patio after an evening of catching bugs, then go back to their caves early in the morning.

Wow, realy cool. Who knew bats as small as humming birds existed? Not me, that's for sure. Great shots and kudus on the bravery to even attempt getting within 7 inches of a live bat!

Thanks :)

The only thing I was scared of was him flying into my face, making me fall off the ladder. Luckily, he flew off in the opposite direction.
