I have too many bags. mostly backpacks or slingpacks. I miss having a 'small' bag that I can use for just a single body and lens. as the title suggests, the body is a 5D III (with a grip) and the lens could be a 24-70L II or 24-105L. are there any good bags out there that suit the needs of what i'm looking for? I don't want to have to feel like i'm forcing the camera/lens combo into the bag to make it fit, but I don't want to feel like things are jostling around inside of there when i'm transporting it either. obviously the attached grip makes things a little tougher (I also use a shoulder strap). I've dug through this particular forum, and some mighty large threads, but haven't really come across anything. would appreciate any advice here (thanks in advance).

5DIII, 7D, 16-35 f/2.8L II, 24-70 f/2.8L II, 24-105 f/4L, 40 f/2.8, 135 f/2L, 85 f/1.8, 100 f/2.8L macro, 70-200 f/2.8L II, 430EX II, POWERSHOT S95.... i'm your huckleberry.

Domke F3x or F6. My preference would be the F3x. Plenty roomy, but doesn't have all the unnecessary padding that makes other bags seem big all the time.

I use a Crumpler Mild Enthusiast (L) when I want to wander around with a single pro-body camera and longish lens "ready to go" e.g. 1-series + 24-70L I + the big petal hood mounted... or 135L again with hood attached. You may possibly fit it into the smaller Mild Enthusiast (M) also.

judging by the pics here

.... the crumpler appears to be a bit bigger than what i'm looking for (seems about as big as my smaller slingpack). i'm looking at a bag that will fit one my body/grip/lens combo nicely and that's about it (for when i'm going to a fam get together, or as storage for when the lens/body/grip combo is sitting unused at home).

Crumpler's also one of the overpaddeed (IMO) jobs that won't fit anything less than a snug load while the "unpadded" Domke can collapse around your gear.

Dear DIPPS,

I’m with JON on this one - Domke, given your criteria.

Also, may want to consider Think Tank’s NEW CITY WALKER 20: (Interior Capacity 599 cubic inch)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Citywalker_20_Black.html (external link)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKHMoqmpSzs (external link) (6:28 minute product video)
-since you may find you want to have your Canon speedlight 430EX-II on occasions, available for say fill light. I think it should handle your Gripped 5DmkIII nicely/comfortably(with grip/camera positioned parrallel to the bag length not diagonally as in the product video).
[I have the CITY WALKER 20, and find, for my needs/applications, it the most versatile both "carrying/transporting" & "shooting" bag I own (don’t ask – I have done the bag iterations for too many years; with the only consolation that experience is a good but costly teacher!) The CITY WALKER 20 is a great walk-about-bag, or travel bag, for my 5DmkIII with mounted 24-70f2.8L(camera positioned parrallel to the bag length), 580EX-II and say 70-200f2.8L IS mkII &/or 85f1.2LmkII. It makes a nice ergonomically narrow carrying profile and the bag conveniently “crumples” flat as well as is feather-light for travelling too!]

Or

Think Tank’s smaller NEW CITY WALKER 10: (Interior Capacity: 398 cubic inch)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Citywalker_10_Black.html (external link)

Good luck on a choice that works for YOUR needs.

Mary

Is the city walker big enough to hold a gripped 5d3? I have a retrospective 10 and it barely fits.

The "M" size is probably more appropriate. They are pod shaped and are the least bulky bag I've come across - even the large.

This particular model is lightly padded.

Try putting the Gripped 5DmkIII in the CITY WALKER 20 parallel – while I don’t own a Canon BGE11 Battery Grip for my 5DmkIII (W6.0”x H4.6”x D3.0” Wt: 1.86 lbs), my large/heavy Canon 1DmkIII camera (6.1”x 6.2”x 3.1” Wt: 2.92 lbs) fits, which I would think maybe a somewhat similar dimension to a Gripped Canon 5DmkIII.

TT CITY WALKER 20:
Light air-mesh Nylon
OD: 13.8” x 9.8” x 6.7”
ID: 13.0” x 8.7” x 5.3”
Wt: 2.0 lbs

TT RETROSPECTIVE 10:
Heavy cotton canvas
OD: 13” x 10.5” x 7.0”
ID: 12” x 9.5” x 6.0”
Wt: 3.0 lbs

The TT CITY WALKER series bags’ softness & flexibility were favorable characteristics for me, both enabling comfortable contouring to my body during carrying and quick ease of entry & exit of photo gear. (OP didn’t want to have to feel like forcing, but didn’t want jostling around inside either).

While the TT RETROSPECTIVE series are good durable bags, its heavy inflexible/rigid cotton canvas was the reason I passed over the TT RETROSEPCTIVE 10 & 20 bags.

Just one view - bags are such a personal decision…

Hope this helps.

Thanks. The R10 and CW20 isn't that much different in terms or interior space. I didn't want to request the wrong size from TT and be stuck with it. Time to contact my source at TT for a review.

If you are concerned, you have the benefit of ownership (i.e. knowing the dimensions of a 5DMkIII with Canon Battery Grip), so…. measure twice and order once.
Try in store viewing, or maybe order from a source with a fair return policy, such as say B&H (who in my experience and many many purchases over the years are consistently reasonable with transactions).
I have only ordered directly a few times from Think Tank Photo (even though I own a lot of the TT product line), but again they have been a terrific supplier source too.
Good luck & happy shooting...

while i appreciate the suggestions, so far i'm leaning towards the domke f-3x. also looking at the f-6.....
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=500581

.... mainly because i already have bags that i can fit a body and 2 or 3 lenses in, but the bag i'm looking for this time just needs to be big enough to fit my 5DIII/grip/lens combo, nothing more.

also trying to determine if i'd want to do the ruggedwear version or the sand color version.

Dear DIPPS,

A nice bag… interesting to note isn’t it, the DOMKE F3X specs (& hallmark/legendary flexible canvas material):
Exterior Dimension: 12.5” x 7.25” x 9.6" (LxWxD)
Interior Dimension: 8.5” x 5.5” x 9.0" (LxWxD) [Main compartment]
Wt: 2.0 lbs

So many nice bags, so many choices - have fun with whatever you choose.
