Good day. Sorting out details to try and make a decision on gear to invest in to fill a specific role: Support a Canon 7D with at most a 70-200 f4 non-IS (More likely using the 28mm f/1.8, 40mm f/2.8, or 85mm f/1.8), in an equatorial mount with motor drive in a reasonably portable and inexpensive solution.

Going through reviews on various mounts I'm seeing some very mixed messages as to the suitability of the EQ-2 for my desired goals. On one hand I'm seeing many comments on its short fallings that suggest they are relatively easy fixes (cleaning and adjustment) to fine tune the mount into something that will work well for very light setups, while others simply bash it as useless.

Part of my goal is to be able to tune things in and modify the drive motor for error control myself, and possibly swapping out the legs for a more stable design. (I'm a geek. If I can't really tinker with something I buy then odds are I'll get bored of it.)

Has anyone attempted to use the EQ-2 with the EQ-2M for a similar setup? Barring stepping up to larger scopes did you feel the mount was worth the low cost for what you were able to achieve?
