Do keep in mind that email protocols don't actually include any kind of security checks on where they are being sent from. There has been some effort to correct this, but the core of the technology is still from an era where the extent of 'Electronic Mail' services was expected to be between people who most likely would end up meeting each at conferences sooner or later.
This means that it is very easy to spoof an email and make it look as if it has come from somewhere it didn't. It is generally easy to send emails 'from' someone else's address without needing access to their account, the same as it is easy to slap someone else's return address on a physical envelope and drop it in the mailbox.
Do take care when clicking on any links or trusting anything contained in emails. "Big" things like a major company going under and actually sending stuff out is a great cover for scam artists. Why come up with your own cover story for sending the email when you can latch on to a legitimate series of emails and fit your own content inside?
