My wife and I have a Canon Powershot SX10 IS and we are trying to pick the best memory card for it. I immediately went after class 10 32gb memory but decided to research the camera's capabilities first. Most google searches turned up people saying no higher than class 6 and 16gb. Then I noticed this logo/icon on the model number plate on the bottom of the camera and can't find an answer to its meaning.

It's the '10' with two circular arrows surrounding it. I was hoping it means it can handle a class 10.

Thank you for your time!!!

The answer is yes according to the SanDisk Product Compatibility Tool-

I see that those are compatible, and the SX10 IS manual is no help at all as far as capacity and speed. Are those just 'compatible' though? Or will they be used at that specification as far as speed and capacity? It matters because of cost.

Thanks again for the swift reply and your time!:D

Out of curiosity (and an unwillingness to get back to work after lunch ), I tracked this down.

That style of symbol on electronics (circular with arrows) is not a recycling symbol of any sort, like the triangular-with-arrows symbols you might see on various plastic items like milk cartons and other food packaging. Nor does it have anything to do with supported card speeds.

It is a mark related to the Chinese RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) regulations. The "10" inside the circle means that, while concentrations of one or more of the restricted substances may exceed limits, that substance is not likely to exceed concentration limits in the environment for 10 years of "regular use". "Regular use" is not well-defined in the sources I found, but it suggests that for electronics especially, it includes the expected time between purchase and disposal of the item.

Hope that helps...

As for your core question, I would guess that the SX10 might benefit from a class 10 card, but given its age, unlikely to benefit from a UHS-1 card. That being said, with a good card reader, you will benefit from a UHS-1 card when transferring files to your computer.

Keep in mind that the SanDisk compatibility tool is trying to sell you something. Their UHS-1 cards will certainly work with the SX10 (i.e. it's compatible), but it doesn't necessarily mean that the camera can take advantage of the additional performance.

Thank you gmikol! That is awesome information and very helpful. I guess we will have to get the 32gb card and see if the entire 32gb is accessed. I can live with the speed limitations of class 6.
