Ok so I was trying to help a friend of mine with the same problem I faced. He has a budget of around 4k and has a 5d mark 2 he also wants to shoot fashion and portraits . I suggested he buy the 24-70 mkii and the 70-200 mkii. He thinks that's way to much to spend when your an amateur , but I always thought good glass is your best purchase... What do you guys think

so $4,700 is too much, but $4,000 isn't? tell him to buy used...or buy the tamron alternatives 24-70VC, and 70-200VC for $2600

He was going to buy both used for 1800 (70-200 2.8) and 1900 (24-70) I would have brought the tamron myself but I been scarred by buying a sigma 85 1.4. Decided not to buy 3rd party lens again

Outdoor/indoor or in studio setting?

For controlled portrait, I'd take S35 + 85LII + 135L over the pair of zooms...

For $4000....you can get 35L along with the 70-200 MK2, its a great combo for portraits, or go Tamron 24-70 VC plus 85LII. Personally I'd prefer option 1.

5D Mark III, Samyang 14mm, 35LII, 85L II, 100L IS Macro, 24-105L, 70-200L 2.8 IS II. 580EX, AB400, AB800.

Perhaps the 135L and the 24-70 f4? Do people really shoot portraits and fashion at 2.8?

Yea I was thinking primes and lights would be more effective lol but the 70-200 is sooo good and I'm debating on wether or not to buy the 24-70 mkii or sell my 70-200 and get primes with lights

Both wants something for studio and outdoor

could probably squeeze in tamron 24-70 vc (new for the 6 year warranty), canon 70-200 2.8ii, refurb (same 1 year warranty as the new ones), and the sigma 35 1.4 for under 4k. (as all of these lenses have a warranty, longer on the 3rd party but all at least 1 year, it makes the 3rd party thing less scary if that kinda thing bothers them.)

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1318601
they are out of stock right now but the thread sugests they come back in often (for the 24-70).

These are out of stock as well but also come back in stock very often (when they go on sale they are gone super quick but are still a good buy at 2k.

And this is full price but great warranty, and all the reviews say this lens is spectacular.

That comes to 3900 (could be found for less sometimes but they sell out super fast at anything cheaper than this, other than the sigma which I honestly don't think has ever gone on sale lol.

And actually for portraiture the tamron 70-200 is pretty nice.
which would leave you the money for a 85 1.8 + flash/accessories, or a 135l.
You can do alot with 4k if you spend it wisely.

I would buy a 70-200 f2.8 IS II as it basicly is a 100, 135, 200mm f2.8 lens.
And maybe a 50 f1.4 and/or 85mm f1.8 prime lens.

$4k is a big budget. Go for the 24-70mm 2.8 and the 135mm f2.
The 135mm f2 is faster, cheaper and has better bokeh. Fashion does not require the flexibility of a zoom as you are directing the subject.
