I've seen this photo a few times on POTN, so the missus and I gave it a whirl. Not perfect, I know, and maybe the flowers are too bright, but we got a nice, mysterious smile that makes the picture work for me. And the f2.2 seems to be a good choice here.

We can reshoot, so appreciate any C&C. Nifty Fifty and T1i. Evening light in the shade.

1) 50 mm-ISO 200-1-500 sec at f - 2.2

I really like this photo. Your wife does have beautiful "smiling eyes". My only suggestion would be to darken the flowers next to her head and brighten her eyes a bit.

I do not like the DOF. The hat is so prominent and the center of it being out of focus, keeps drawing my eye back to it.

I don't like the hat being out of focus. I'd pull her away from the flowers a bit so you can get a nice blur to them, and try f/2.8 or so.
