I think I already know the answer to this, just asking the experts here in case I'm wrong....

I just purchased an off brand wireless remote on ebay. It works just fine, except that I don't get autofocus with a half press on the remote when my cameras are set for back button focus (same with both the T4i and XSi). I've looked and can't find any way around that. I know it won't be the end of the world, but it sure would be nice not to have to remember to change the custom function settings back and forth when I want to use the remote.

Sorry but there's no way to get auto focus using only the remote when the camera is set for BBF.

Yeah, the remote is not extending the function, it's extending the button, which you've effectively disabled. It's one or the other. When wifi is more standard, I believe the eos app extends the function.

Agree with the first two replies. You can't expect a disabled button to work.

OK, thanks for the replies. I figured it was something like that, I appreciate everyone who took the time to spell out the detailed explanation. Guess I need to put a tag on my remote so I don't forget to change the setting before I start shooting.

I have my camera set up for BBF but can I set a custom function that will override BBF and revert to the shutter half press for focusing? I will have to try to remember to try that tonight. It would come in handy when I pass my camera to my wife or one of my daughters since they don't understand BBF.

You mean "not" shooting? :)

Yes. You can configure the camera and save those settings to C1, 2 or 3.
