Found this guy on one of my horses this morning.. approx 1 1/2" long.. We've had bigger ones here, not sure if it's some sort of giant 'horse fly'. Always seem to land on the hind end of the horse. Any idea what it is?

Got several bites a couple months ago. I hate those things.

Thankyou for the ID & the link... They're so much larger than our 'regular horse flies, glad to get an ID... They must be smart as every year we seem to get one & it's always found on the butt end of the horse, where they cant get them off.. Thanks Moose!!

Well, I'm not 100% sure. There are other large black flies that are non-biters. I mis-ID'd one not long ago.

But, if these one's have a habit of landing on your horses, instead of plants....
