Crop or full frame

I have the 100L lens coming today and was wondering if its better for macro in crop or fullframe as far as working distance goes.

is there any difference as far as working distance goes with full frame or cropped camera?

is the DOF on crop wider than the full frame?

Working distance will be the same (about 5"-6"), but a crop will fill the frame more.

To me, the DoF appears thinner on a FF when shooting macro. But my 5DIII also seems more forgiving when it comes to diffraction than my 40D; with my 40D I'd use f/11, and on my 5DIII I prefer f/14-16. That also seems to give me the same approximate DoF. I'll have to take some comparison shots one of these days.

As in all things dealing with photography, opinions may... and will... vary.

All in all, I prefer shooting macro with my FF. I just have to add extension tubes more often to fill the frame. I can live with that.


By the way... enjoy the new lens... it's a peach!

If you were buying a dedicated macro camera, I'd suggest a cropper not because of the crop, though it has it's advantages, but because of the models with twisty fold out LCDs.

That said, you have a superior in most regards 5D3, that's what you should use.
If you want the advantage of the twisty fold out LCD, you can get that on a 5D3 buy using your Android phone a $5 cable and DSL Controller App.

Your S3 is fully compatible. I use my Note II and it's great.
Read the home page about cable, you just need an "On the Go " adapter to use the Camera's cable,. but I did find on Amazon the one and only cable that has the right connectors on both ends.. (it's hard to find as it's a male male thing)
It just makes the connection a little cleaner with no adapter involved.
