Hi everyone:

I took this photo earlier today along the banks of the Yukon River. The bird was sitting very low in a bush. After I took this shot, it took off and flew right between my legs--that has never happened to me before, and I was quite startled. In any case, although this may not be the most accomplished photo, I would really appreciate your help in identifying this little guy.

Thanks a lot!

Julius

Juvenile Chipping Sparrow, would be my guess, but I certainly am out there on a limb, just like your bird.

I bet you saw some White-crowned Sparrows in the area. Am I right?

Chuck

Thank you both for your answers. I did not see any adults in the area, actually, so I was unsure of the little guy's heritage.

This bird is a toughie to be fair but based on the following features, you have a juvenile American Tree Sparrow. Note the post-ocular strip (there is no dark mark between the eye and the bill which a juvenile White-crowned Sparrow would show), the upper mandible is beginning to turn dark and the adult tree sparrow has a dark upper mandible and yellow lower mandible, and the extensive dusky streaking on the head, neck and breast.

No matter what kind of bird it is, you did good. Very pretty capture! Love it!

Lee, out west the WCSPs have pale lores and the only fledgling ATSP I've seen had a bicolored bill.
I've got many pics of first winter WCSPs and even a couple that still had some streaking. Maybe it's just one we'll never know.

Regards,
Chuck

Oh boy, made all of you think very hard there. Again, thanks so much for your input, and also thanks to you, grizzerbear, for your kind comment!
