D600 or 6D... which?

I have a D600 which is a duster. Nikon told me that they will give me a full refund.

I LOVE the Dynamic range on the D600 but from what I understand Dusty D600s are STILL being shipped by Nikon so getting a dust-free copy is not a guarantee.

I am thinking of either getting a D800 or a Canon 6D. D800 was a little more weight than I want and after what I have been through with Nikon I have to wonder if they should still be selling cameras. I was wondering if the 6D was at all comparable in IQ with the D600?

Advice please....

Does the canon system have the lenses you want ? My opinion is-- either system is fine.

Either camera has its stronger sides. While D600's DR is definitely better, 6D has a better high-ISO performance and better autofocus in low light. Watch this video for a very comprehensive comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9HlxWqcG5Y (external link)
As for high-ISO performance, here are studio test comparisons (external link).

costs $20 and 10 mins to clean the sensor and you're away...what's the big deal anyway?

I absolutely love my 6D to death! It's all personal opinion.
This site lists some key advantages of each camera over the other. Click link and scroll down a but and it shows advantages of each. http://snapsort.com …anon-EOS-6D-vs-Nikon-D600 (external link)
To me, the rating number (100vs90) isn't very accurate. Just look at the key features for each.

I moved to a DSLR in 2009. I had no equipment in either camp, so I could go either way. I knew two things at that point. First, Canon and Nikon both make some of the best DSLR photographic equipment available. Second, Bodies change; I am buying a lens system. I chose Canon because, in my humble opinion, Canon offered more, better, less expensive glass than did Nikon. Looking back at my then mostly uninformed self, that may or may not have been true. Several thousand dollars worth of glass later, I am in with both feet, now. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!

If your OK with the ergonomics, clean your sensor and move on. The d600 ergonomics was by far the worst offender when I tried it. Not worth switching camps over a dirty sensor. Kind of lame of Nikon though.....

Dirty sensors can affect any DSLR, from any manufacturer.

To be fair this is true, but i can understand why one would be happy to clean their sensor from dirt and dust they themselves got there while changing lenses. Cleaning the sensor of oil caused by what is a known manufacturing fault is a different story

Thank you.

It is a well known and documented DEFECT, not normal operation, which is why Nikon is offering a full refund. It might take $20 and 10mins to clean yourself, but if you have to do it every 2 months that's $120 per year you are spending just to have the camera. That is not a small amount of time, money, or work and gets worse if you have to do it more often.

Every company makes mistakes. The question is how they deal with them. And Nikon has done the right thing. They should also be working on a D601 to replace it. The question is why you chose Nikon in the first place and whether those choices still apply.

If before the problem revealed itself, you started wondering if canon was better, switch. If you were happy, all you need is a way to pass the time while Nikon creates a better version of what you wanted in the first place.

As I've well found out with two 6Ds. Returned the first one, then decided I'd just accept it on the second. I wouldn't let the dust/oil issue be the sole factor in pushing you toward the 6D, because it can have the exact same issue.

Personally, dust aside, I'd choose the D600 if I could afford good lenses for it. The DR at low ISO straight up embarrasses any Canon SLR on the market; frustrating as it is for me, I can only imagine what it'd be like for you after actually owning a D600 and getting used to it. On the flip side, the 6D is slightly better at high ISO, and can push into the ISO 10000-12800 range with somewhat usable results.

Really, I think the D600 is the better all-around camera; it has better AF for action and sports, and better low ISO DR for landscapes. This pretty much leaves night photography as the one niche I can think of where the 6D excels.

But lenses are the caveat. Nikon is less forgiving of FF users on a budget, failing to offer affordable, slow lenses without IS (17-40L, 70-200L f4) for those of us so inclined. Seems like the only good UWA option they make is the 14-24; and while it's really good, it's also 2 grand.

Play around with both. First time I was comparing Nikon with Canon was when I first got "serious" about photography and was looking at a DSLR. I think I was comparing T3i to D5100 at the time. The next and last time I did that comparison was when I was making your decision. D600 or 6D for an entry level full frame. I wasn't too invested in expensive Canon lenses at the time, so I felt I could do a system switch if I wanted to.

Both times, I made the decision purely on ergonomics. The Canon cameras just felt easier and more intuitive to use and felt a bit better in my hands. I"m sure other people will say the same about Nikon.

You're not the only one! When I was looking for my 1st DSLR I was looking at the T2i and D5000. The Nikon just felt less natural to me. I haven't held a Nikon yet that has felt good in my hand compared to a Canon. It is just personal preference, they'll both get the job done!
