WRONG
I only own four of them...but I also own 7 studio flash heads and 3 power packs.

Like a carpenter has an array of different sizes and types of screwdrivers,
and different sizes and types of hammers,
and an array of wood-shaping tools,

...each tool has a situation in which it is better than the other tools of the same type. The skill and knowledge behind his craft is understanding and using the best one for a given situation...and switch between them as appropriate from moment to moment.

No, simply responding publicly to clarify so that someone else does not think the same thought, for real.

Apparently many folks do not understand why individual 'portraiture' with speedlights fails to best light the face and that merely 'Illuminating' the face is far from flattering it with good 'lighting'. Sadly that point seems too often to go unappreciated even after reading it, and the speedlight buying continues...folks are trying to use them for hair lights and kickers with improvised snoots, etc. and blindly placed during setting up.
That is why, when I ran into the circumstance of trying to best light the prop in this thread and get glints of light in key places, I thought folks might better understand that specific usage of lighting placement optimization. And how similar trial-and-error placement of speedlight hair lights is equally inefficient to blindly obtaining a glint of light on a particular spot on the prop .

Nice info, thanks for posting.

As I learned my lighting with Speedlights, and I do the vast majority of my shooting on location, they're still my go-to lighting tools most of the time. And my "guesses" as to where the light is going to fall is usually pretty accurate; I'm moderately proficient at figuring out the line-of-sight of the Speedlights, where the shadows are going to fall, what the shape of the shadow is going to be, etc. And with every shoot I get better at it.

Still, I definitely acknowledge that there are a number of things that one simply can't do without a modeling light (or a bunch of trial-and-error) - for instance, predicting the glint of light reflecting off individual pieces of glitter.

When I get a battery pack for my Elinchroms, I'll probably start using them more. Right now my studio strobes keep me tethered to an outlet which very rarely suits my needs.

Escalating this old thread back into recent visibility, as there have been some threads started about 'I want lighting...what do I get?'
