$80-250 depending on lens? Please! Easier and potentially cheaper to just sell and buy a new one in the mount you want.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

So would not having the choice be better?

If you don't like their prices, sell and re-buy. If you want to keep your lens, change the mount.

Ya, or buy a nikon mount thats usually cheaper IF the quote to change the mount is only $80 you come out ahead lol.

For the "Sigma Lottery" it is a good option. If you swap systems and you have found the holy grail of sigma lenses then yes, it would be a great option.

Choice is always good, but the price is a bit silly, Sigma aren't Leica.

I like Sigma's prices, they are dirt cheap, which is funny why they're asking what amounts to 1/4th the lens price.

True... Then again switching systems just to continue using third party lenses is kinda... odd.
No one switches systems for the camera, the 5D2 used to be the ultimate IQ camera, now it's the D800, next generation of cameras it might the the other way around again; but your lenses are always the same.

I think it's a great idea. I'de pay for it if 150 or less. Beats trying to sell it for whatever market price.

That actually seems like a good deal to me.

Maybe I'm out of touch, but the SIGMA lenses I have owned and sold did not keep their value like the Canon brand does, and thus the act of selling and re-buying would be a considerable cost.

If I'd sold my Canon mount and bought a Nikon mount new with my SIGMKA 500mm f/4.5 EX HSM I would have stood to lose $1,500.00 or so,. even more on my 300-800mm..

IMHO, $80.00-$250.00 I would expect the high end is reserved for lenses like the 120-300m etc..

Plus, if you get a copy you are convinced is a "very good one" why part with it.
I think it's a fantastic idea.

Lastly, try doing this with your OEM lenses! ;)

Now if they would only 'upgrade/convert' the old "Film Only" lenses...

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?
Digital - 50D, 20D IR Conv, 9 Lenses from 8mm to 300mm
Analog - Mamiya RB67 Pro-SD, Canon A-1, Nikon F4S, YashicaMat 124G, Rollei 35S, QL17 GIII, Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex 1st Version, and and entire room full of lenses and other stuff

This is definitely great news. Honestly, I wish Sigma would create an adapter that would allow you to use both systems instead of having to send your lens in.

I know if may sound easier to just sell your lens and get a used one of a different mount, but I think Sigma is psychology giving you peace of mind and confidence with their company. If I buy the Sigma 120-300 Sport, I will know that I can trade mounts if the need ever arises. Will I ever need to, probably not, but the fact that the option exist is good to know.

There are Nikon lenses that I would love to have on Canon, but it's not possible (to keep AF). Sigma is on the right track to breaking these barriers. Offering more options to consumer is always a good thing.

I think an important question is how the mount conversion will affect the resale value of the lens. Would you buy a second hand Sigma lens which you know was converted from Nikon?

Buying second had is already a bit risky, so adding one more uncertainty factor (what the conversion did to the lens in terms of reliability, performance etc.) can drive buyers away.

This was tried, Tamron used to have the "Adaptal" mount, but it died out. It was a good idea for full manual,. but with the different electronics in the AF AE systems it no longer made sense.

It may well be that with the current crop of innovative, new glass Sigma is producing that the resale value situation will be changing shortly. Let's face it, Sigma is kicking Canon and Nikon in the nuts with their new lenses. Now, to rub salt in the wound, they are offering a mount change service that may eventually break the leash the main manufacturers have had over their customers. I am loving it! GO SIGMA!

It is a very good idea, yes.
They failed years back with their YS exchangeable mount system for some of their early manual lenses.

The pricing is a problem - here in Germany one has to pay a maximum 325 Euro, which is USD 431!

Now Sigma needs more lenses the main camera manufacturers don“t have all three Canon, Nikon and Sony together. For example liken Sony STF 135 with apodisation filtering for smooth bokeh (external link), or Nikon Defocus-Control Lenses for variable bokeh (external link), or Canon MP-E super macro lens.
