I maybe asking this question totally wrong, I would like to know a few things about a layer mask.

1. What it is used for?
2. How to use it in an effective manner to my advantage?
3. Is it only used for one purpose or many, if more than one what others?

I have Adobe Photoshop CS2, thanks guys.

Basically, a mask is a saved selection. So if you ever do anything to a part of your shot - like blur the background, or sharpen only the edges - then a layer mask is very, very useful.

Layer masks are at the foundation of any advanced image editing. Check out the Help files, by hitting F1, and typing "layer mask" into the search bar. You will find a ton of info there. Once you kind of understand what's going on, search the forum for the same phrase, and see how they've been used.

search the forum for the same phrase, and see how they've been used.

It's sort of like using the eraser tool, without actually erasing anything, so you can always go back to make changes later. Works in Levels, Curves, & other Tools, too. I'd be lost without them! Have fun!
