I use Serifs MoviePlus X5 (X6 is out now) you can get a free version (which I believe is based on X5) here http://www.serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ (external link) I also saw an advert somewhere for X5 at £19.99 a few days ago.

Art that takes you there. http://www.artyman.co.uk (external link)

Depends how deep into videography you are wanting to go. If you just want something with a little more oomph than movie maker Premiere elements does the trick, and if you want something professional there is the adobe creative suit, or sony vegas.

AVID and Premiere Pro are editors of choice for professionals. Premiere is the way to go for DSLR footage if you have a fast enough machine. You can also get Davinci Resolve for free, it can do some editing, but it is mostly a color grading and finishing program.

Sony Vegas Platinum is the consumer version of Vegas and is WAAAAY more powerful than you'll need as you're learning I'm sure. (I'm sure all of the consumer versions of pro editors would be as well).
It is pretty amazing how powerful these $100 editors are now-a-days.

It really is especially considering that less than 15 to 20 years ago there really was no such thing as a non linear editor outside of the biggest and most expensive Hollywood studios.

I have to 2nd BrickR's recommendation of Sony Vegas Platinum. it's basically Sony Vegas (pro version) but limited to 10 audio and 10 video tracks. A powerful consumer product! I've edited several web series and numerous personal videos with it. I've used Vegas (pro) for many years and the lighter version is very impressive for $100, and much less a resource hog on your PC.
Bonus, you can find many MANY videos on YouTube for tutorials to help with the learning curve. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the pro looking videos you can produce with it.
