This camera puzzles me. It seems to be a weird time in Canon's line. You dont see many for sale, but this thread isnt very active either.

personally, I love my 50D, its a great body. I couldnt bring myself to trade it in towards my 5D and still plan to use it. It feels nice, its sealed up well, and the build on it is great! Its just seems to be an elusive model.

Well, it's the 40D was out for a while, then came the 50D, and just a couple months later came the release of the 7D and 60D, so I don't think it was on the market as the newest and latest camera for as long as it should have been to be really appreciated.

You say this but checking the Canon timeline on DP Review (external link) the 50D was announced on 28/08/2008. The 7D was announced on 01/09/2009 and the 60D was announced on 26/08/10. So it was at the top of the Canon xxD line for two years. It wasn't facing competition from the 7D for the first year either. So by rights it should have sold really well.

Of course this was at about the time that the complaints about banding in shadows started to come to the fore. It was also a full 50% increase in pixel count from the previous 40D, and Canon have yet to release an FF camera with a pixel density even matching the 40D, let alone any of the 15/18 Mpix crop sensors. Of course not underexposing, and preferably using ETTR reduces the noise issues significantly with the 50D and it's successors.

Also the 40D stayed on sale for quite a while after the 50D came out, probably almost to the time the 7D was released. The 40D had been a really popular camera and it still sold well I think because of all of the noise complaints regarding the 50D. Of course the 7D, which IMO was the true successor to the 50D, then cannibalised 50D sales after it's release.

I only got my 50D in August, as a 50th birthday present, and have not been out shooting with it as much as I would like. One of the reasons that I went with the 50D apart from having the (again) IMO much better control layout is the fact that I could use all of my old cards/batteries as well as the battery grip from my 20D.

Here are a few of my 50D shots.

Alan

Thats also the reason I went with a 50D. ALL my batteries and grip worked with it from my 30D. I even had a 7D in my hand and was debating the two, but a 7D would have required a PC upgrade to deal with the file sizes and video haha.

I do hear lots of talk about it being a noise monster but I have never had a real problem with super aggresive noise at higher iso. Maybe its from the 2.8 glass and flashes to help with that.

Here's some from mine

That is 800 ISO, i feel pretty comfortable goig to 1250 or 1600 with it.

Depending on the environment was whether or not my 50D showed noise. Lots of low lit places would really show the noise at high ISO, while the same ISO at bright environments would not show too much noise. Then again, most cameras are like that from that era.
