How come your images are so clean at 400 ISO? Are you cleaning them in post? I use a 50mm 1.8 and my images are really noisy at 400 ISO. You think it might be the lens?

I shot in raw, then tweeked the exposure and saturation in DPP, other then that no! I don't know for sure but I thought the lens had no effect on noise.

Cheers,
JOE

I think you need to pull back a bit on the sharpening on the second shot, you have a very pronounced sharpening halo right around the dog. I find this can be a real issue at times with similar dark to bright high contrast edges on my 50D too. I occasionally have to resort to a local brush with negative sharpening in LR to fix them.

Sometimes if the contrast is high enough you can even see the halo with no sharpening or any other processing applied. My default LR input is totally flat, with WB As Shot, and literally everything else zeroed out, using the Adobe Standard profile. I was just processing an image where I noticed the halo, and had to run a local brush adjustment around the outside of the subject. Not a brilliant shot on my part, but it shows the issue. This is after I have tried to deal with the Halo, and the output sharpening seems to pretty much to have put it back:(.

I like the shot though. I don't use LR, I do all my post in ACR but thanks for the tips. :D
