Did a little repair work today , when I bought my 50D off CL the back screen was in poor condition. Following the excellent advise from " Treat me like a Tourist " replacing your Canon 5D screen , it was a snap.

I called my good old Canon service in Irvine , Ca and 4 days later the new screen was at
my door. Install took just 10 minutes.

No comment from yourself on this one Keith, but the connection between the couple is well seen. That shirt really zings out of all the green. :)

I've only just seen this John, thanks for the kind comment. This couple were great, they actually booked me for their wedding in 2014 after this shoot so they must have liked the results :)

It's probably the lighting, but it looks like the couple were pasted into that photo?

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. It was 2 430EXii's one behind the couple at about 1/32 power to back light them and another at about 1/8 power to give a bit of fill light. I wanted just enough to light the edges of the dance floor but no further to keep a sense of intimacy.

It was shot at f/3.2 on a 50/1.4 so the depth of field isn't razor thin, but shallow enough to help the couple pop a little bit.

Haven't had mine for very long, and I'll confess I haven't been out to use it yet (bought it as a budget sports shooter), but why do we collectively think the activity with the body is lower? Are there fewer users?

I had to scroll through about 10 pages to find the thread!

It's 2 generations behind, so there will be less out there being used. It's finding a second wind with ML's RAW video hack, but you still need an external recorder (which most serious video shooters have anyways), so it won't get widespread acceptance again.

That said, I still miss mine. It basically represented Canon's excessiveness before the financial crashes starting in 08. Build quality was second to none on a crop shooter at the time. It's still almost twice as fast as my current 6D, which I do miss when I shoot the very little sports I do. I plan on getting a 7D as a backup eventually, but the 50D is still quite a capable camera.

For some reason, I have 2 copies of "Canon EOS 50D Digital Field Guide" by Charlotte Lowrie. If anyone could use a copy, pm me with an address and I'll get it out to you.

It's noticeably better than my 7D. It doesn't suffer from the burst slowdown in low light (yeah, I know the work-around). The shutter sound is sweet. The smaller files are workable on my old computer. The LCD is nice. The Ef-S screen is good for manual focusing. Magic Lantern is a handy add-on. It's a nice machine.

this might be what I need to go after a 50D. I was convinced it was what I wanted, but I horribly lust the 7D. Seems though the more and more I read about the 50D, the better and better it gets, especially its sealed and the lens precision focusing.

The things that the 7D has over the 50D is a superior AF module and higher MP count. The 50D is smaller, a tad lighter (I think), with almost equivalent build quality. The electronic overlay is pretty neat imo, but if you're a MF shooter then the precision screen is priceless.

If you need (easy) video and AF for sports/fast action, continue your lust for a 7D. Otherwise, save some cash for lenses and get the 50D. When I had it I shot 95% using only the center AF point, and it worked beautifully.

The higher MP doesn't concern me, that just makes the images that much harder for my aging PC to handle. I's also not really concerned about video. Its a take it or leave it thing for me. The AF is something I will really miss out on though.....

That being said, I can reuse a BUNCH of what I have for my 30D, such as the battery grip, all 8 of my batteries, the shutter remote, and it will still be a manageable image size for my PC. Im pretty convinced in the 50 and new glass at this point.

I'm loving this impulse buy. For some reason, I'm liking it more than the 60D. Mostly the boost in fps and feel of the body. Perhaps it is the "new'ness" of it all. In hindsight, I kinda wish I would have purchased this instead of the 60D a few years back.
