I am in the process of upgrading from a 1D2 to a 1d3. My plan is to keep 1D2 as a 2nd body, but am thinking of selling it to fund a SX50 HS.

Just considering bird photography how do you think these two setups compare? I would never get rid of my 300L, it would always be my primary outdoor sports lens. But wondering if I should look into these SX Cameras for birding purposes.

Thoughts?

Also, I did a quick forum search but didn't find anything other than sample photos with SXs that look great. Forum links would be welcomed as well as comments.

Thanks.

The big lens is obviously way better than a bridge camera that costs as much as the teleconverter ;)

I have an SX50 that I use a carry-around camera and particularly for birding. I also had a 70-300L for my 60D and the IQ was superb, but I found it too cumbersome for a carry-around and the reach didn't compare to the 1200mm equivalent of the SX50.

But I mainly take bird shots for ID purposes, not high quality "portraits" of them, and the SX50 is just fine for that. Also, if a bird is really distant or obscured by a tangle of vegetation, the digital zoom on the SX50 is equivalent to 4800mm, enabling one to focus and obtain an ID under extreme conditions.

Yes. Ive seen Ken's photos for quite some time now. And they have always impressed me. Actually one of the main reasons i am considering this.

The sx50 does a great job except AF for BIF.
however, not much will beat the 300 2.8 with a good TC on it.
I would just do the 1d3+300+1.4xTC

I'm mostly a back yard bird photographer. I ended up getting the 1D3, but maybe I'll give the sx50 a try sometime. I'm sure I can find it somewhere with a short window no questions return policy.
