60D - Help! I need a lens

I have a 60D and I was looking for 1 lens to keep on it. I shoot just about everything but more people than anything else. I was looking at a used canon 17-55 but I also saw a used 28-105L for the same amount. I really like the 17-55 because its 2.8 and I'm not always in the best lighting. Both were about 700 of should I go for a new Sigma 17-50? I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks

I have the 17-55 and love it, been on my 40D easy 95% of the time since I bought the camera.

I do have a filter on it at all times (I do that on all my mostly used lenses) and read somewhere that with this lens it helps prevent dust from being sucked in when you zoom. I thing there are two tiny air holes in the front or something, been a long time since I read that. I have 0 dust in mine. Great lens. 28-105 is a whole different thing on a crop, I'd miss the wide end.

Coincidently I have the same camera, which is how your post got my attention. I went for the recent Sigma 17-70 C and am absolutely loving it. Quality and price are spot on, and you're buying something brand new, literally since the lens design has also been improved on the previous model.

My previous lenses were a kit lens 18-55 and a canon 18-200. I found the sigma excellent in most situations and range is good.

I have 60d and 17-55 2.8 and it's a great combo. 28-105 would not be wide enough for me. I don't know about the Sigma, as never had or used one, but looking at the reviews, Canon 17-55 is superior, and definitely worth the money, especially that you getting a second hand one.

I have a Tamron 17-50 and for me, the range is just a little too limiting, especially shooting people/portraits.
I would take the Sigma 17-70 for more versatility. Of course it is f2.8-4 but it has OS.
I have a Tamron 28-75 and find myself at the longer end for people (my go to portrait lens) and 28mm is just not very wide on a crop body.

The Canon 15 - 85mm is my suggestion on a crop body. It is every bit as good, or better than the 24 - 105. It gives you a 24 - 136mm on the Canon crop. I bought mine about 8 mo. ago and is my main lens. It only comes off when I need my 70 - 300 VC Tameron which is another fantastic lens. Check them out. You will not be sorry.

My one lens solution was the sigma 17-70 OS. It's a great lens as long as you don't mind the variable aperture (a constant f2.8 in that lens would be amazing.....but would also jack up the size and price!). I just switched to the 24-105L because I found I was rarely shooting below the 24mm mark, but I still find it hard to let go of the 17-70 (turned down a couple local offers as I'm just not sure if I keep with the 24-105 or switch back to the 17-70)

Sigma 17-50 is a good lens to pair with the 60d.

I recently sold my 24-105L to fund a purchase for a new body (I'll probably wait for the 70D to come out) so the 17-70 OS stays on my T3i most of the time.

It's a great walk around lens. It was honestly just as sharp as the 24-105 plus it has 2.8 at the wide end. Not enough reach as the 24-105 obviously, but it's sharp enough to crop if needed.

For $300, it's an awesome lens. And it has the macro function you can dabble with.

The 17-55 is a wonderful lens and deserves the praise it receives. I had it for years and loved using it. Shooting with a constant 2.8 aperture is a joy and the IS is fantastic.

I have the Canon 60d and the Canon 17-55mm. I love it. I previously had the sigma 17-70. I sold it even though I really liked the sigma but the 17-55 is much better in low light and to me produces better images throughout the lens. It is great indoors and low light environments with the 2.8 constant aperture. I am partial to the 17-55 lens. You won't be disappointed.

(By the way, I recently got the 70-200 f4 IS for long reach and it is AMAZING. Blows me away how great the images are. The IQ is stunning.)

Being basically lazy I bought a Sigma 18mm-250mm to reduce the # of opportunities for dust to enter the body while out and about. I doubt if it will be used much indoors.

The Canon 15 - 85mm is my suggestion on a crop body...

If you want just one lens go with this. It is an amazing lens. Grab a 50 1.8 if you want to try out narrow DOF stuff.

On a crop body, 15-85 beats the pants off the 24-105.

From the looks of it, I can't go wrong with the 2.8 17-55 Canon.
