Hi all,

Need to replace the trusty 400D as it is well used and showing plenty of signs of wear. Until the 70D was announced I was set on the 7D as its replacement.

I know most of the opinions and details about the 70D are just guesswork but do you think it is worth waiting for the 70D. I can pick up a 7D for just over $1k Aussie which to be honest is my budget, the 70D is on preorder at $1499. Oh and the cash is in my pocket ready to go.

I don't care much for video I just want to be able to take shots of family, friends, small stuff, large stuff with a bit of cycling and motorsport thrown in.

Would love some thoughts on this, even if it is just to confirm my leanings towards the 7D.

Cheers in advance.

If you have no interest in video, then go for the 7D. I have the 7D and it's a superb bit of kit, I also shoot video with it and whilst some of the video features of the 70D are nice, I'm not making the change as I value the other options on the 7D far too much.

Other positive is that you can keep all your CF cards moving from 400D to 7D!

That was in my original decision to go to the 7D.:)

If you find the specs of the 70D acceptable, and don't do video, you may want to consider the 60D. It is a tad newer, and a bunch cheaper than the 7D.

Depending on your style of photography. The 7d excels in fast changing situations especially with erratic moving subjects.
But my guess is for most people, the 70d will more than satisfy.

If you need to change now get the one you can afford. There is more utility in the 7D than the 70D when it comes to set up also.

I would go for the 60D and use the extra money towards something else to compliment your setup.

Thje 70D has better image quality, especially at High ISO. I would wait on it.

Maybe a bit better, but I wouldn't pick the 70D over the others due to IQ.

However, I like the feature set of the 70D much more than the 60D - adds AFMA back in, faster burst rate, significantly better AF system. Plus it adds the new phase detect for much better Live View / video shooting. The 70D vs 7D is a tougher call - I'm thinking of going to the 70D to save size and weight, but I will wait until reviews verify the 70D AF system is really the equal of the 7D.

Pretty hard to recommend the 7D that is almost 4 years old now. I still like mine, but keep in mind it seems the 70D has the same AF system, can go 7fps (so not really much slower). It also has the swivel screen and Wifi that can make it much easier for the casual shooter in certain environments. Too early to call , but the IQ at high ISO may be a touch better on the 70D, and potentially IQ overall (the 7D has been a bit challenging to post process for many people).

The 7D has some features that are missing on the 70D, but you may not notice it like multiple custom modes, etc.

I have a 7D and it has served me well, but it seem due for a refresh very soon.

In case you haven't seen

I'd love to know where people are getting the copies of the 70D to test, that they are so sure of this.

"The 70D has better image quality"

Unknown/unproven. We have some Canon-provided samples that are not much different at all.

"The 70D has the same AF system"

In fact it looks like only the still-mode AF sensor is the same, the video/live mode AF is totally different, and the 70D lacks a separate AF processor or custom mode assignment/point expansion that the 7D has.

Check out DP Preview of the 70D with test samples and compare them to the 7D.
