Hello All,

I am playing around with diffused glow as a method of making pictures more interesting. Here are pictures of my kids at the beach. I am interested in your opinions about the quality of these pictures:

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

The first one looks a bit overexposured in my monitor. The second one I like very much. The effect works well on both of them, although the second one has a bit "over processed" look.
thanx for sharing,
T.O.

The second is excellent. The diffused glow is very nice here. I agree with T.O. that it has an 'over-processed' look, but I think that is effective in this shot. Using diffused glow goes against all the "rules" of photography, but rules must often be broken to get the result we want. I would crop a little off the top of the shot, but other than that I wouldn't change a thing.

I like the first one and think a close up with natural side lighting would really bring out her skin tones. For me I think the diffused look is a little too harsh in the second shot. Thanks for posting Jim.

Alan,

Thanks for the comments. Being that I am a beginner, why is "diffused glow goes against all the "rules" of photography" and how does that apply to duotones, sepia, and other effects?

I like them both but the only thing that could be better is a croping. There is too much negative space on both of the pictures.

Jim- diffused glow often increases the higlight and actually can magnify the hot-spots on a photograph. This is undesireable in most cases (but as I said, your shot works well imo).

Jim,
I also like how #2 turned out. I haven't found too many of my shots that work well with this effect. I think you did.

All,

Thanks again for the comments. I too think that the second image came out better. This was my try to salvage an otherwise very soft picture. Here is another one from the same session:

The bigger image (http://static.flickr.com/27/91565370_ce64e6726f_o.jpg (external link)) shows more of the effect.

Thanks again,

Jim
