With the upcoming Perseids Meteor shower next week, I have a few questions.

I've had good luck getting some nice milky way shots where I live using my 5D2 and 15mm lens. I've played around with various ISO's, exposure times, etc. But I am hoping to get some nice shots of the upcoming meteor shower on the 12/13th and I'm curious to what the best setting, timewise, to go with and avoid any star trails. I don't do any stacking nor am I interested in going that route.

I've read here before that using a higher ISO allows you to shoot with slower times avoiding those trails. That however also depends on the camera body you have.

I recently acquired a 1D Mark lV and know it performs nice at the higher ISO's. I've yet to try using it for star shots at night with that 15mm. There is a 1.3 crop factor on that body though. So from those who are experienced, what would be my optimum set up for the shots on Mon/Tue? Which body would you go with, ISO, and shutter speed?

Thanks for nay input.

I use Canon gear...have several bodies and lenses and am quite pleased with them.

From my experience you can't go wrong with these settings:

20-30 seconds
ƒ2.8 to ƒ4.5
ISO 3200+

If you are comfortable going higher than 3200 ISO then go for it, the more sensitive the ISO the higher chance of capturing a meteor?

We might miss out on the Perseids this weekend, too much cloud cover :( going on a hunting trip too so there would be absolutely no light pollution where we are going.

Use the 5D Mark II. 15mm = 33"to 40" second exposures without any star trails using that focal length. Use f/2.8 or whatever the fastest f stop for that lens is and I personally wouldn't go any higher than 6400 ISO. I typically shoot anywhere from 3200-6400 ISO without too much noise.

Thanks for the input...but which of the two bodies do you think perform better at 6400 ISO? Why not use the 1D4?

I'd go with the full frame over crop especially if you're trying to capture the Perseid Meteor shower. You don't necessarily need to use 6400 ISO. To be honest 3200-4000 would be plenty with the 5D2.
