I'm thinking of making a photo album for myself and I'm wondering which would be best. I'm thinking square format (since I have horizontals, verticals and squares), hard cover, around 12x12, photos would be on white or off-white background with quick explanatory text (location, etc.).

edit: also, about half of the photos would be b&w, the other half color.

Personally, I much prefer matte, but it's down to personal taste on that decision.

Depending on the subject and colors, the glossy can look really nice. It also depends on who prints the book.

Gloss would be my choice.

I normally go for Lustre which is usually (depending on who does the printing) the best of both worlds - sort of a semi-gloss.

Ok, going pearl/satin/lustre/whatever you want to call it. Screw the extra expense, I used to have lenses that cost over $1k! I'm a high roller!

Next question: white, off-white or black background? Are there any particular rules? From my readings it seems black sets off colors nicely, and that you should generally avoid a background color that's going to blend into the edges of your photos (like if you have a photo with a lot of black near the edges, don't use a black background). Agree, disagree? Anything else?

Luster or Lustre in my opinion, little of both worlds :-)

New question: should I stick to one type of background (plain white, black, etc.) or is it acceptable to have white-background and black-background pages in the book?

I've done them before with different backgrounds, as long as the facing pages use the same background. If I'm doing color photos, I like to group photos together by color "theme" and then use a background that complements them.
