Got a chuckle out of this ad on Amazon. The link was posted in a CL ad to justify the high asking price for the same model camera. Do people really fall for this crud? Really?

There was a guy on our CL selling a T2i (body only). He said it retailed for $1400+ last year when he bought it new. It made me smile.

I bought two... I'm going to keep the bodies and flip the lenses here for a handsome profit...

Amazon is weird about old gear, it's always like twice the price of it's replacement. Though, they have to be selling some of that stuff otherwise they wouldn't put it up at those nutso prices. Amazon is not stupid.

Sometimes people place too much value on what they have, especially cameras.

I keep a pretty close eye on the local classifieds and for a few months now someone has been trying to flog a T1i with the 18-55 for $950 FIRM! It seems that they paid over $1200 for it new and have only used it three times. In their defense though... it does come with a Roots camera bag and a 4GB card.

Couldn't help but comment. I look at the classifieds here on occasion looking for "stuff". I understand popular bodies and L glass hold their value for quite a while, but I am amazed how many sellers of accessories will say, (bought two years ago hardly used, and ask ie... 385.00 for something you can buy new with a warranty for 395.-400. I wish I could get almost retail for my "gently used" 10d, that's only worth about 80 bucks.

But a product being discontinued doesn't matter much. What matter is what service the product can give, the availability of this old product, how much better the replacement item currently available is and how much that replacement costs.

So with the high price of a 5D3, the discontinued 5D2 is still quite expensive on the second-hand market. And the 5D classic also produces very stunning images making it valuable despite being old.

Somebody must be buying the stuff, since more than a few members here claim they are able to consistently sell their unneeded photo gear for more than they paid for it.

Note that the same people also claim that they only buy used gear. And that by buying used gear, they manage to use it for a while and then resell it again without losing any money - sometimes even selling for more than what they payed, themselves.

I bought a 10-22 for $480 a few weeks ago... Excellent condition, I could sell it for more if I wanted to but I bought it to use it.

It definitely happens once in a while, just gotta be smart about what you buy and you can get great value out of doing so.

of course, i also have purchased things new only to see the "value" plummet - like my mk iii grrrrrr.

Yep...i notice this all the time. There are many folks here who SERIOUSLY over value their items for sale.

There is also one particular member here who has sold more items and has more stuff for sale than most camera stores... Makes me feel not so good about it.
