In one week, I visited Gotland (Swedish island) and it was the first time I visited this place. After two days, I realize the potential of this Island have when it comes to birds. I decided to investigate.

I rent a bike and start cycling around the island. With me I have my smartphone so I can see which birds have been reported on the island in recent days. The first birds I saw was a GOOSANDER DUCKLINGS.

I saw a report of a Grey Heron, but where this bird had been seen was 10 mil away. It has always been a dream for me, to see a Grey Heron but this time I got to feel defeated.

It has now passed another day and I have seen a lot on this island, very beautiful environment and the bird life is at its peak. I took the bike again. It was a very hot week, at least 30 degrees every day. I had a weird feeling about something when I headed out this time. A feeling that I usually have at home when I'm out in the woods with the camera. It tends to be a positive thing. I had cycled for 3 hours when I thought I saw something other than just:

Cormorants

might it be? .....could it be? ....
it is a living, breathing Grey Heron!

I prepared the camera because now it was time to sneak in water. With all due respect for the bird so I took it very easy and gave a long distance. After 10-15 minutes in the water I notice how tired this bird is, it looked at me sometimes and did not care much. Was this bird the ultimate model? I crept closer to the very open and large surface. Eventually, I was just 5-6 feet away from this beautiful bird who bravely even sat there when I rode away, like something has never happened :)

Good for you! Love the story and photos. I recently posted photos of a heron as well. Many years ago my children and I walked right up to a Great Blue Heron...guess it really does depend on the bird, and what they are used to having around them.
