Ok, just popped and bought a used 1D MK III, now to help pay for it i am going to put on the market the 40D just to pick up a couple hundred of the purchase price, is there any reason for me to keep the 5D classic?

If you want to have a full frame camera and also a back up would be a reason, I would think.

I just sold my 40D and 1D3 earlier today to a KEH rep that's in town for a local camera shop event. Could have made more on a private sale but my time is very valuable to me right now.

Anyway, the reason for ditching the 1D3 is that I literally have only touched it three times since getting my 5D3 (Mar2012). I kept it for a backup camera but recently decided to start up a small Olympus system as a take anywhere camera/lens setup. I'm not doing any paid sports work so the 1D3 has just been sitting in a bag doing nothing.

My logic was this; my new E-P5 with Oly 12, 17, 45, and 75 primes is more than enough to handle backup duty for 95% of my shooting situations. If I really need a backup for fast action shooting I'll pick up a used 7D so both Canon bodies share the same battery/menus/layout.

Unless you absolutely need the 5D (and more importantly, know you'll continue to use it) I would go ahead and sell it now vs. later. Just my 2 cents. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for all the comments. I bought the 1D III to replace the 40D that i use for LAX, soccer and hockey....price was right and for what i do. I am thinking the 5D is nice to have.....but seem to use the 40D more than the 5D. I am thinking the picture quality of the 1D III is probably at least comparable or better than the 5D so any other uses such as landscape or environmental portraits can probably be met by the 1D? Am on wrong?

The 1D3 works great for landscapes provided you don't need to go ultra wide. That's really the only drawback to a 1.3 crop sensor (lack of true ultra wide solutions).

17 on your 17-40 is a significantly different FOV between both cameras.
