Is there a specific one for the 350D or will the EX15 fit?
Thanks

The EX15 is the one to fit the 350D and other EOS models.

My Canon can.. I just need to find out how

Hi all. I bought mine first and told Ray about it, so he bought his - then he convinced me that it reduced the image instead of magnifying it (took some doing). So, the advantage to me anyway 'cos I've got a big hooter and glasses,is that it keeps the back of the camera away from it. Secondly, I don't think reversing the lens will make any difference. I just turned my glasses round and I can still see OK or am I missing something somewhere.

Regards Bob

Hi All and SIMMO2006

Yes Bob I really was a twit to rush out and buy one just because you told me it magnified - I've learnt now not to listen to you and follow my own hunches.

Regards to Bob & all

Hi Guys

Can anyone tell me the point of having a 0.5x magnification in the EX15. It seems a retrograde step to me to make the viewfinder image smaller when it is already struggling - or have I missed the object of the exercise?
Come to think of it - I dunno why I bought the thing anyway now.

Please someone - convince me I'm not going bonkers and there really was a reason for the purchase.

If the magnification had have been 1.5x I could see a good reason for it.

Regards

Ray

I think that if the magnification had been 1.5X some of the filed of view would be outside the eye piece.

Hi All. Well I've read all the comments and consorted with Ray who has done the same and we are still, both of us, confused as to why Canon, in their infinite wisdom, decided to put a X 0.5 lens in the extender or even what is the primary purpose of the thing in their estimation. Perhaps some wise technocrat from Canon may tell us - that would be extremely interesting.

Regards everyone. Bob

As a person who wears specs, i think it can only be to make it more comfortable for those who do wear glasses. And, given that you can remove the lens, and use the ex-15 as an extension for those blessed in the nasal department, i guess it works for everyone.

I actually like it.. and haven't found the smaller view to be of any distraction.

I tried mine on my 5D and then took i off immediately. I wear glasses, and my nose always oils up the screem, but with the extender on the 5D the settings in the viewfinder display got way too small for me.

I think it's a very personal thing - for glasses wearers it probably depends on your prescription. Seeing as you found it worse, maybe you could try taking the lenses out to see if that is better or worse than being without the EP-EX15. If you're careful, you can always put the lenses back in - though it's not a terribly expensive item if you do damage it.

I wouldn't want to be without the EP-EX15 on my 20D - in my cases with the lenses in. I find it essential with my glasses, otherwise I can't see into the corners of the viewfinder as the eye relief is too small.

Yea, I am looking for an extender, so if anyone here is bothered by it, sell it to me. UK.

Throwing a Dioptric Adjustment Lens E -3 into the melting pot

My glasses prescription is, for my right eye, -3.25 -1.00 x15, add +1.25. In other words, the spherical error is -3.25, with 1 dioptre of astigmatism, and a +1.25 near vision correction (so total near vision correction is -2.00 with 1 dioptre of astigmatism). I wear varifocals, probably the most up to date Essilor Varilux pattern though I haven't got a note of exactly what pattern my current lenses are in, and I'd expect to be holding the camera in my 'straight ahead' vision, which will be my distance prescription.

With my glasses on and an eyecup / EP-EX15 combination fitted, I found that I needed my 20D's adjustment wheel wound right round to the - side - indeed, I really wanted one click beyond the - side for sharp viewfinder focus. I was really after -2.25D adjustment, when -2D is the biggest excursion available from the central point.

With just an eyecup on the camera, I wanted three clicks to the - side, a -0.75D correction. However, the viewfinder was too large for me to see into the corners; I couldn't use the camera like this, which is why I bought the EP-EX15.

I recently bought a Dioptric Adjustment Lens E -3 (which is actually a -2D lens - the viewfinder, at the central position, is -1D) by holding it up to my eye - the shop had no rubber frames. In today's post, I got the Rubber Frame Eb for Dioptric Lens that I'd ordered, which puts a surround on the lens so that the combination finishes up like the eyecup with a lens in the middle. The frame is separate because 1 series cameras use a larger surround, to give an overall result similar to their larger eyecup. With the Dioptric Adjustment Lens E -3, I'd expect the points of sharpest focus to move eight clicks to the + side, as it's a -2D lens - values in dioptres are additive.

I tried the E -3 first with the EP-EX15. To be honest, it was difficult to focus the viewfinder with the camera's adjustment wheel (the focus point markings should be sharp), the viewfinder was so small. Of course - negative dioptre lenses are somewhat reducing.

So, I put the E -3 on the camera directly, without the EP-EX15. Fitting that on the camera shows a slightly smaller viewfinder, which I found in best focus six clicks to the + side (I'd have predicted five clicks to the + side, to be fair it's a fine distinction between five and six clicks). The camera is usable without the minimising effect of an EP-EX15 with the lenses - I have a beautifully clear, large viewfinder that, on a quick trial I seem to be able to see into the corners of satisfactorily with glasses on.

This last result suggested that I might have enough accommodation to get my glasses prescription in at the -end - at five clicks to the + side there's -3.25D available. Indeed - I can get what's pretty good viewfinder focus at full -, but I think I have too much astigmatism for things ever to be clear without my glasses.

The only problem now is my nose against the back of the camera. This seems to be suggesting that I should try taking the lenses out of my EP-EX15.

David
