Don't forget the histogram is based on the picture style set in camera.
It doesn't seem to make a huge difference if shooting raw, but it can mean that the raw file doesn't always reflect the camera histogram.

Magic Lantern has raw based histograms that aren't affected by the JPG data/picture styles at all ;) The histogram becomes based entirely on the raw data.

Exposure is a detailed subject. It's no wonder that people have problems.

Yes, i was aware of that but ML is still not widely used on this camera so wasnt going to mention it.
I cant wait for it to come out of alpha, both for this camera and my 650D. I loved it on my 60D.

It gets used enough ;)
You should really give it a go. So many great features lately.

Send me a PM (external link) if you have any problems or questions.

I think all of the new features (except dual-ISO) are working on the 60D too.

Unfortunately there are a lot of rich people in the world who think that buying the best gear will make them a good photographer. Not saying the OP is in this category by any means, but I guarantee you probably one person per day buys a 5D MkIII and only knows how to use it in Auto mode.

Completely agree.

It has amazed me recently here on this site, how many VERY basic exposure and metering questions have popped up. Reminded me of a statement made years ago by the editor of a sailing magazine. He claimed that the readership renewed every two years, so he could recycle articles and educational pieces to suit.

what's the best version of ml to use on a 5d3? The latest official alpha is almost a year old...but i've been hearing of newer fancy versions. Unsure how to get them or if it's wise to though..

I agree in part, a 5DMKIII is not exactly marketed as a beginners camera, but there is nothnig wrong with starting out on one of the best prosumer cameras on the market? We all started somewhere, but having the tool that will allow you to grow in to it cant be bad can it?
People aren't born with all this knowledge, they need to learn it, and while it bugs me that we get the same questions every week, places like this are here to help people get an understanding of whats what, and to get out of the auto modes.

It seems to me there is still some elitist attitudes on some forums that seems to come from the old guard.

Nothing to do with using in auto mode....I did not know that I have it on 5D MKIII until you said it. I have it for almost a year and I think it is a PHENOMENAL camera overall, I love using it and get great results with it. I just said that with MKII I never noticed this constant underexposure....to the level that I started checking the brightness of my screen.
Can manage the exposure compensation, not a problem....I just thought about why it is the case, never had it before with other Canon cameras. I think I typically do +1 in PP with MKIII these days. Will need to start adjusting in camera...

My post was not directed at you, it was a reply to the other poster who commented on people buying an expensive camera and not knowing how to use it, other than in auto mode.

For what its worth i agree with you, the MKIII does seems to produce slightly darker images when put up against some other bodies, same lens, same settings.

As the following thread shows, and per my own experience, every camera I have used (and there have been alot of them), I have had to run +1/3 to +2/3 all the time otherwise images would not be where I would want them on the raw histogram.

Also, the histogram, as was stated, depends on your JPG settings, thus your picture styles have an impact, like contrast and color settings. Shoot in neutral if you want to reduce this impact.

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1321354

I have reviewed many cameras back to back, and when they are using the same scene and settings, at most I have seen a 1/3 stop variance in exposure in the raw files, and this includes the 5D, 5D3, 7D, 1D3, 1D4, 50D, 40D, etc.

For base level exposure I've found the 5D3 to need a +2/3 to +1 and have that dialed in as standard - when compared to my 7 years with the 5D. Just the way they've programmed the metering I suppose though it's annoying as it negates the advantage of having a +3 stops of EC when you've lost the first of them by default. I'm a wedding photographer, was really looking forward to having +3 for backlit brides but instead I use spot meter and lock exposure on the M-fn button till it's unlocked by another press which means I can lock the exposure on the face for as many shots as I want. Would still prefer the spot meter wasn't center point only crippled but we take what we're given...
