Went out to shoot some promo shots for my beekeeper friend and had a few minutes for macro - here's some pics from the entrance of one of the hives as well as the efficient murder of one bee by a wasp...

#4/6 are great, the others don't seem very sharp to my eyes, perhaps a mix of overexposed/blured, don't know how to explain it.

but to me those 2 are very good and come up miles away from the remaining...

A lovely set of pics - agree with above in that the wasp shots are very good indeed.

I think how I see them is that the bee shots are slightly over-exposed, but do not have a great dof - clearly no photo-stacking has taken place which is not a bad thing. I can see the sharpness on where I believe the focus was but they could do with a bit more sharpening which might correct the issue in post processing.

Excellent set!

For the third frame you need to be at an angle so that the eyes of both the bees in the foreground are in focus. Also it seems to me that your diffuser needs to be closer to the subject (the specular highlights look a little harsh, and getting the diffuser closer will improve the diffusion of the light).

Thanks all for the comments! All of the shots are taken one-handed using a 5DIII, 100mm L and two extension tubes. They're natural (direct) light only - shot at ISO 3200 so maybe the noise reduction is causing a bit of the blur. I had to clamber round the beehouse to get to the hive entrances and there wasn't secure footing there so I just snapped off a couple of shots there.

I admit I pushed exposure a little in post processing and warmed up the pics because I like the look. I'll see what I can do about sharpening more, point taken there!

Excellent series.

Interesting wasp, here in the UK we have a wasp called the Bee Woolf that stock burrow with up to 150 for its grubs to feed on.
