Sigma 17-50 over Sigma 17-70?

On my T3i I'm using a Sigma 17-70 F/2.8-4

I would like to replace it with a Sigma 17-50 F/2.8


Both have image stabilization, only difference is constant F/2.8 on the 17-50, and slightly shorter zoom which I'm fine with.


While I want a constant F/2.8 I'd prefer to improve image quality also, can anyone tell if this lens produces better quality images? I've heard both sides to this so not sure.

In terms of image quality, they're pretty close - you probably wouldn't notice the difference. It really comes down to what you want more - range or constant aperture. Do you feel that your 17-70 isn't producing quality images?

Not exactly as good as I'd want
If its something slightly better with constant F2.8 that'll leave me satisfied.

It's just for the time being before I get a 6D

He's talking about the pre-Contemporary version I assume, then I would agree.

There are now two versions of the 17-70 with OS. The newest "contemporary" version that can use the Sigma USB and the older OS version that can not.

The contemporary version is a little better then the origanl OS version of the lens.

I mixed art and contemporary up. Oops.

I've had both, well I had the HSM 17-70, I did like the range better, but I got a better result out of the 17-50.
