I used my 400mm the whole time Linda. And if I went again I'd do the same. In fact I think I borrowed Lee's 1.4 as well so I was shooting at 560mm.

Well "he" is lovely looking dog

Quick question, you mention using the 400mm above with a 1.4x TC. Was this on you 5D3??? as there is a recent firmware update for the 5D3 allowing the likes of the 400mm f5.6 to AF at f8 when using the 1.4xTC but your Skomer trip predates the f/w update........so how did you get on with it AF'ing or were they manually focused. Sadly none of the Skomer images on your Flickr give the EXIF data to show which ones were taken with the TC added???

Skomer, the longer the better, although there are loads of birds I mainly used my 300mm and 500mm. One from the 300mm, plenty more on my flickr in this set http://www.flickr.com …y/sets/72157634​445930939/

I"m pretty sure ? the firmware update was just before I went. I definitely had AF on the centre point with the 1.4x on the 400mm on the 5D3.

Thanks for the feedback Apparently the v2 firmware (Edit ~ now I thought it was supposed to be v2 but the dl says v1.2.3) even allows for using the 100-400 zoom with a 1.4TC as mentioned here at the end of the page http://www.usa.canon.c​om …_display/EOS5DM​3_firmware

Thanks Ian for your info too - gorgeous selection of pics in your Flickr too.

So even though you 2 used full frame camera's on your visits you have got some pretty close shots. Sounds like my 400mm would be the most sensible one to have on my 7D.

So another question about Skomer - are there many Razorbills there too that can be photographed easily? I really like Razorbills too so would love to get some nice pics of those too.

Finally here in Merida, Mexico after leaving Southampton at 15:45 yesterday.

Not what I expected so far but god am I glad I bought the 5D with me!! So many photo ops its unreal.

Off to shoot something obscure......Will check in later folks.

I didn't see many Razorbills at all on Skomer, however did see a few on Ramsey Island
