Just a quick posting of my first go last weekend with AI Servo cases and what a challenge I gave myself

This is far from perfect and the AF struggled but considering the 7D would have failed badly at the same task I am pleased with the way the 5D3 'works'

Getting the inflight captures was hard of the few where the birds were coming right at me none were in focus the AI servo in the cases I tried could not keep up but considering the size of a Blue Tit maybe not a surprise??? This is a crop of approx. 30% of the frame.

1/2000, f5.6, ISO2000 ~ gotta love the Auto ISO and the (relatively low) noise on this sensor

I took more including a grab shot of a Goose BiF at the local lake and I was well impressed with the way the 5D3 locked on and held focus for the second or so I had the bird in view (again another situation where the 7D was/would be hit & miss...............wil​l PP it and post 'later'.

I think that's a great shot. Glad you're enjoying the camera so far.

I took some video of a bluetit flying into a box, haven't even looked at it properly yet but I never seem to be able to do video properly on a DSLR.

Did a firmware update on my 6D last night always a nerve wrecking experience

Hello all, the Local council have gotten in touch & want me to take some shots of some cemeteries for their website/brochures etc and asked me for a quote - only issue I have no idea what the 'going rate' is?

I can't imagine they'd want more than 4-8 shots of each site (4 sites in total). initially I was thinking £20-25 per site, but then figured that £100 was a lot of money for not all that much work. Any ideas?

Break it down, there is travel, insurance etc, work out how much an hour your time is worth, then how many hours, don't forget the post work; how do they want the work presented, prints, cd?

The quote should give them the break down of what you want as this give some space for negotiation

Not that I am an expert in this type of work I usually review quotes at work for engineering stuff

Currently National Minimum Wage is £6.31 / hour for someone over 21.

90 minutes per site, looking around getting your shots? 4 * 1.5 * 6.31 = £37.86

3 hours of post production? 3 * 6.31 = £18.93

That's £56.79 before you start adding in fuel / fares, travel time, tax, insurance, **ahem** VAT **ahem** etc

That's also assuming you didn't want to charge for licensing their usage of the photos.
I found a usage calculator on the Association of Photographers website.

Digital - Company website
European Union Only

1 years usage - £96
5 years usage - £336
10 years usage - £576


Who's it for? Ah. £10 for petrol and they'll throw in a photo credit.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, at the moment i'm sort of stuck between making the quote low enough to be attractive to the Council (and possibly get some more work in the future), whilst trying to ensure it'll be financially viable etc for me.

Ima happy as a pig in dollop... I've got a new toy in the shape of a Kenko 1.4 teleconverter for my old 50-500... this is a test shot straight from camera resized to 1200x800.

It's far from perfect, but it isn't bad either

This is a bit of a bug bear of mine. Firstly, remember that you are doing the work of a professional photographer and by professional, I mean someone you pays his mortgage from his work. So don't do it for free, for almost free or the biggest lie in the industry - recognition. Work out a fair rate as if it's your job not your hobby. You can bet the person asking you for this is getting paid properly.

You've got to pitch a price that's fair which is always hard but what Laurence is fair you cold even try for a little more.

I like that JD, the trouble with the photography game is there are to many " photographers " out there who will do it for "credit " or free as it is more communally known a couple of weeks a go a hotel in Folkestone asked local photographers on facebook to give them photos for their website and I quote " we will credit the photographer ". My reply was can I stay in one of your room for free I'll credit you. I have also lost count of the amount of " models " who have contacted me say how much they like my work and how much they want to work with me only to follow with my rates are, when you point out to them that they are asking to work with me so they should be asking what my rates are they normally reply with photography is free because it's digital my time costs. This sums up people attitude to photography now it's digital so is free as you don't have to buy film etc. End of my little rant.

Bear in mind the costs in producing the shoot, the post-production, permits,food, travel, releases and insurance.

£100 would almost cover my "real" costs to do this job!
