Checkout lightenupandshoot.com (external link). Their specialty is using portable lighting, primarily a Westcott Apollo. They are two guys who moved to Colombia and shoot professionally. Portrait work is outstanding, but also do a lot of street and remote shoots. Lots of gonzo tutorials and videos.

I might suggest a small'ish 33" umbrella. I bought the Elinchrom 33" kit, which has a white shoot-thru and a silver reflective version. Was around $50, but will certainly work on a speedlight. Both are nicely compact. You could theoretically use the silver as a reflector in natural light, if you work it just right.
