2 weeks ago, I needed to charge the battery in my 1D3 so I put it on the charger. Canon battery and Canon charger. The lights went on showing charging status so I thought everything was normal. Later that night maybe 5 hours later I noticed there were no lights lit up on the charger.

Installed the battery into the camera and nothing... Camera will not power up. I figured the battery and/or charger failed so I bought aftermarket replacements because I dont have the $500+ to get a Canon original battery and charger.

Got the new ones and installed the new battery into the Canon charger. Charger lit up and worked and then finished its cycle a couple hours later. Put the new battery with a full charge into the camera and it will not turn on. Nothing.. Not even a hint of it turning on.

Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm stumped that it worked perfectly before I charged the battery and now it's not working...

This is a new one for me,. I wonder if the battery died and shorted somehow, damaging the camera...

Clearly trip to Canon is in your future,. but I suppose it might be worth trying the old hard reboot...

ie: remove the lithium button battery in the camera. Never had to do this with a 1D so not even sure where they hide it.

I'm looking for it. Can't even find the back up battery in the manual. It states the type of battery which is a CR2025. But where is it?

Should be page 47 in the manual, the CR2025 is just the time / date battery

I found the battery. It's inside the main battery compartment. The screw to remove it is right next to the opening. Off to the store I go! I hope this is it.

The button battery is fine and tested at 3.06V.

On a side note, the original battery and charger dont smell burnt like an electrical short. But the battery does not register in camera or either charger.

Possibly related, but did you at any time in this sequence remove and reinsert the CF card?

The memory card never comes out, but I did check that to make sure it was OK.

Yes. The worst part of this is I'm trying to give a quote on a big job and without my camera, I can't do it....

I can't speak to the MK III but on my MK IV, I can run a condition cycle, discharge/recharge. Also can u get into where the contacts are for the battery itself. It's worth seeing if u have voltage. When in doubt check power. I wish I knew where my DMM was as I'd get u some voltage measurements to start with. Bottom line, I'd like to rule out battery first. Alternatively, if u can power it externally with the wall pack that's another option, the ACK-E4. It will likely tomorrow before I can go on safari for my DMM.

Have you tried cleaning the battery contacts inside the camera?

Brian

Had a few minutes to look for DMM, I can likely get measurements late tonite/wee hours tomorrow morning.

they haven't made it easy to check the battery voltage have they - DMM probes are far too big, even paperclip is too big to get into the contacts!

Only other things I'd suggest checking are that the contacts inside the camera aren't bent [Shades of CF card slot problems] and check that the locking mechanism for the battery works properly, as it appears to operate an on/off switch for the camera. My 3rd party battery locking knob frequently falls off so it's possible that you've actually added a problem as well as having the original battery fail...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Indeed, where is the 0.020 safety wire, or I could simply make up a set of probes to attach to the fluke leads I have already. Alternatively, I'm sure I can fabricate some. Alligator clips, some wire (24 AWG, perhaps). I guess for me anyway, I'd rather have bad batteries than have to get a whole new camera. Well the building probes/leads will not happen to tonight. Also if the OP got in there with a DMM finding a short in the battery becomes a possibility.

just managed to poke a couple of bits of wire into my battery to check which pins are which, looking at the bottom of the battery with the contacts towards you, if you number the pins 1 thru 6 from the left, 1&2 are +12.6V, 5&6 are ground (working on the theory that the charger pins 5&6 are slightly longer than all the rest) A picture probably explains better...
