just managed to poke a couple of bits of wire into my battery to check which pins are which, looking at the bottom of the battery with the contacts towards you, if you number the pins 1 thru 6 from the left, 1&2 are +12.6V, 5&6 are ground (working on the theory that the charger pins 5&6 are slightly longer than all the rest) A picture probably explains better...

Pins 3/4 NC I take it? Thank you!

don't know really, there isn't any voltage on them - they could well be for communication.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

2 weeks ago, I needed to charge the battery in my 1D3 so I put it on the charger. Canon battery and Canon charger. The lights went on showing charging status so I thought everything was normal. Later that night maybe 5 hours later I noticed there were no lights lit up on the charger.

Installed the battery into the camera and nothing... Camera will not power up. I figured the battery and/or charger failed so I bought aftermarket replacements because I dont have the $500+ to get a Canon original battery and charger.

Got the new ones and installed the new battery into the Canon charger. Charger lit up and worked and then finished its cycle a couple hours later. Put the new battery with a full charge into the camera and it will not turn on. Nothing.. Not even a hint of it turning on.

Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm stumped that it worked perfectly before I charged the battery and now it's not working...

Just following up...wondering if u found anything? That would be cool!

they haven't made it easy to check the battery voltage have they - DMM probes are far too big, even paperclip is too big to get into the contacts!

Only other things I'd suggest checking are that the contacts inside the camera aren't bent [Shades of CF card slot problems] and check that the locking mechanism for the battery works properly, as it appears to operate an on/off switch for the camera. My 3rd party battery locking knob frequently falls off so it's possible that you've actually added a problem as well as having the original battery fail...

I'm not suggesting it can't happen, but how do cf or sd pins get bent inside the camera? It's a vey narrow slot? I would think the only way is pushing too hard

I found some small wires and went to see if I could read battery voltage. No voltage read on either battery. Hmmmm. I'll try to see if I can find another battery local to me to borrow and see if it's my issue.

Sounds like a plan. I'm curious to see if it's just the batteries, for replacing the camera might be a lot more! Here's to it just being the battery, if anything.

I'm crossing my fingers. With any luck I'll have a battery to test sometime this week.

CF sockets seem to break for no apparent reason - possibly it's because dirt gets onto the card and the pin has no-where else to go but sideways. User isn't expecting anything other than normal and just pushes until the card seats.

I haven't ever heard of battery contacts getting bent, but looking at the design, wouldn't be surprised if it's happened. It would take some foreign material on the battery (and lets face it, stuff often gets picked up in the bottom of camera bags...)

I got the company that sold the battery to me to send a replacement. The new after market battery works!!! Now to shoot and see how long the charge lasts. I'm relieved to say the least and when I can afford the cost, I'll get a real Canon battery. Thanks for the help everyone! I really appreciate it.

Excellent, glad it was the battery because the camera going south would have been no fun.

Just wondering if u got the Canon battery/if that's the fix? I've been busy and don't check threads like this as near as often I'd like (been ~4 days this time). I'm going on a staycation this weekend about 3 hours from where I am now. Here's to hoping there are some photo ops.
