I've tried searching but it gets overwhelming, so sorry if these questions are redundant to the forums.

Im going to get a flash for my 6D. I was originally looking at the 430 exii, but recently saw a review on the new Lumopro 180. It seems, according to my untrained eye , to have a bit better bang for the buck, but because its new I cant really find many tried and true reviews or real word user experience. Or, im just failing in my searches. Anyways, is there any reason why one would get say the 430 exii over the Lumopro 180? The LP180 seems to have better adjustability and comes in at $100 cheaper. By better adjustability, I think I read that it can be reduced by a certain amount of stops better than the 430exii. Does that sound right? I know next to nothing about flashes, so I am just looking for a good all around flash that I wont need to upgrade in the really near future. I dont need super reach. I would like to be able to get a clean, reduced power flash ability for minor macro work, and for general portraits etc...

Any advise? I also am aware of the Yongnuo, but dont know what model would be the middle of the road.

Thanks in advance

The biggest difference is that the Lumopro is a purely manual flash, whereas the 430exii can be used in manual mode or TTL mode. If you're okay with not having TTL, then the Lumopro is a great flash. An equivalent Yongnuo to the LP180 would be the YN-560 II or III. An equivalent Yongnuo to the 430exii would be the YN-500EX.

In addition to TTL, the Canon 430EX II has several other features:

- AF assist beam: Helps the autofocus system in low light, particularly on the peripheral AF points

- Slave for Canon wireless system: Allows wireless TTL and flash ratios adjustable on-camera when triggered by one of the master-capable flashes/transmitters

- High Speed Sync: Allows for shutter speeds greater than the cameras max sync (1/180 on the 6D) at the cost of reduced power

- Second Curtain Sync: When using a sufficiently slow shutter speed to capture motion, flashes the subject to leave the motion trail behind it instead of in front of it

TTL helps eliminate some of the guesswork involved in setting the appropriate flash power level.

Canon takes about $20 off the price of the 430EX during their rebate periods.

If this is your first flash, get an ETTL capable model. If you are unwilling to pay canon prices look at the YN models that are ETTL capable.
