Adobe's software sales are actually just icing on the cake for them.

They have a large analytical division employing a LOT of computer science, math and statistics PhD's.

Adobes asking price is(was) high, but rhino 3D is outrageous.

Then there are the analytical software companies charging criminal prices for their software.

Gimp is pretty amazing, is free, and I often find it more polished than PS. The only big negative preventing me from using it all the time is the lack of 16 bit support. It is supposed to get it any time now, and that might be the good time to switch from PS.

I went from PS to Paint Shop Pro X5 earlier this year and have been very impressed. I seems to "fit" me better for whatever reason.
I like that their are options out there for editing, and I like that they are getting better and better! I'm not all that concerned with PS because as large as it is in the market, it is not the only option. :)

I could probably switch to something else. But photoshop is just familiar and works

If Adobe has slashed PS price to be more realistic 5 or 10 years ago it would have sold even more copies as far as I'm concerned. I hate what they have done.

I'll stick with CS5. The subscription model is nothing less than a money grab in my opinion. When I buy a new camera that is not supported by my copy of Raw, I'll use the software that comes with the camera. I suspect that Adobe was not expecting the level of resentment. Shortly after the announcement and reaction, they sent me a survey asking my opinion. If there were others who responded like me I don't think it was a happy day for those within Adobe who pushed the new model. Still, money talks. Unless there is a groundswell of rejection that hits them in the bottom line, they're not going to change it. Although one is reminded of what happened to Coca Cola when they changed the formula. No doubt a few moronic MBAs had their careers sidelined over that debacle.

The thing that makes switching over to another software difficult for me is the ACR and bridge part of photoshop. I know lightroom has that covered but i just couldnt use its interface. If they can atleast just make a bridge/ACR stand alone software i would be satisfied. I seldom edit in photoshop and the times i do, its usually simple masking or just for the sake of using plugins.

This. I think it's as far as i'm going with Photoshop until such time as Adobe back down over this, which I think is inevitable in the long term.

I have PS CC and have no problem with the subscription model. 10 bucks a month for first year and 20 a month after that. Its the price of going to the movies one time a month.

The direction of the article is right. Doubling of price for software use by Adobe makes it worth for competitors to invest into the development of an editing suite.

That said, the software examples like gimp are a joke for anybody who uses Photoshop professionally. All those seriously into editing have cs6, and they are good for another two years.

Also, I don't see a pixel based editor coming out.

I see a chance for a vector based application - layers, brushes, everything we have in Photoshop, but non-destructive. I know this all exists already on RAW converters - but no comparison to the tools in Photoshop.

We'll see if another company picks up the ball and launches the photo editing application of the next twenty years. Apple would be one company to think of.

Cs6 probably has more than most need. If you own this and use dng converter going fwd it may be enough
